Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo
(Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro; Funchal, Madeira, 1985) Portuguese footballer
considered one of the best strikers on the current scene. In addition to the numerous titles and
individual distinctions obtained throughout his career with Manchester United (2003-2009) and
Real Madrid (since 2009), he had the honor of being the player for whom a club has ever paid
the most money: in June 2009, his transfer to Real Madrid cost the club 94 million euros, the
highest figure in history.
Cristiano Ronaldo was born in a working-class neighborhood on the Portuguese island of
Madeira, into a family of three brothers. From a very early age he showed his exceptional
aptitude for soccer: at the age of eight he was playing for the Andorinha team, and at ten he was
already playing for the island's two biggest teams, Marítimo and Clube Desportivo Nacional; the
player's father decided that he should join the latter. There he progressed meteorically, and at the
age of 16, after a trial, he joined Sporting Lisbon and moved to live in the Portuguese capital.
Treated as a prodigy, at Sporting Lisbon he was assigned psychologists, personal trainers, study
counsellors and doctors to oversee the physical growth of a promising youngster who was to
become an accomplished athlete. In October 2001, at the age of 17, he made his debut in a full
match in the Portuguese Superliga, making a favorable impression on fans and press alike. His
contribution would prove fundamental in the Lisbon club's 2001-02 title win.
Already in his first year at Manchester United he scored the first goal that would lead his club to
the English league cup in the final of the tournament; in his second season he would mature to
be considered one of the best young players in the 2005 FIFPro, scoring Manchester United's
1,000th Premier League goal in October of that year. In 2006-07 he was the second highest
scorer with 17 goals. At the end of the season, his salary was already around 4.2 million euros a
year.
In the meantime, the Portuguese player had developed an enormous catalog of technical
resources: an impressive free kick, impeccable and unpredictable even for the most prestigious
goalkeepers; an unbalancing speed in the moves; a portentous mastery of headers. This is how
he developed his reputation as a fearsome striker, even at great distances from the opposing goal.
He would appear by surprise from a second row and overflowed his markers with speed and
quality; he traced sudden diagonals and was an expert in finishing with a changed foot (attacking
on the right and finishing with the left foot, and vice versa).
Cristiano Ronaldo played in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers, where he managed to score
15 goals and finally on October 10, 2017, he managed to seal the qualification to the World Cup
with the Portugal national team.
