Ghana is establishing a Green Fund to support the scaling up of
interventions in the renewable energy sector, and, most
especially, transitioning towards widespread use of solar power.
Solar PV generation constitutes 0.3% of total generation in
2018The National Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Programme, which was launched in 2016, targeted residential facilities in urban areas, with the approval to install solar panels for 1,006 homes. The second phase of the Programme was piloted in 2017 to focus on providing electricity to rural households in off-grid communities by 2020 and beyond. Solar PV systems of 500Wp capacity was piloted in 200 rural households in 16 off-grid communities.
Several CSOs and private sector organisations are actively
engaged in the energy sector providing innovative solutions to help increase access to clean energy, particularly in the area of clean cooking stove and roof top solar panels.
Anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (Indicator 9.4.1)
from inefficient energy use indicate the need for urgent action to combat climate change and its impact (SDG13) and promotion of renewable energy sources such as solar-powered systems. However, expansion in irrigation, particularly solar, has trade- offs in the long term with groundwater depletion in parts of Ghana.
