Fisheries Department staff robbed by Mexican
pirates near San Pedro
By Benjamin Flowers: Two employees of the
Belize Fisheries Department were robbed by
Mexican pirates this weekend while they were
out on a trip to monitor coral.
Winston Dennis Aranda 49, and Henry Brown
Jr., 32, reported to San Pedro police that while
they were conducting the coral monitoring
activity on Saturday, in a treatment site at
Barracuda patch within the Conservation Zone 1
of Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine
Reserve located 22 miles North of San Pedro
Town, they noticed a skiff fleeing the area.
Both men entered the water to carry out their
duties when the vessel returned about 30
minutes later and its captain pulled a gun on
them and fired a shot into the water. He also
tried to open fire on their boat but the weapon
jammed so they sped off. The boat went some
distance and then returned, docking beside the
fisheries vessel, and a young Hispanic male
boarded the boat and stole several pieces of
equipment as well as cell phones, all to the
value of $3,875.00.
Two man reported a robbery that occurred on
their boat while it was near fisheries vessel.
The boat then sped off in the direction of
Mexico. Aranda and Brown then visited a
nearby Coast Guard base before heading to

report the matter to police. Investigations are
ongoing.

Government of Belize announced that the
handling of sugar exports would be relocated
from the Port of Belize Limited (PBL) in Belize
City to Big Creek in the south; a decision which
has left stevedores and other members of the
Christian Workers Union (CWU) facing a
reduction in their income by 50 percent. Today,
Albert Division Areas Representative Tracy
Taegar-Panton, said that she has met with the
CWU and feels that the conversation
surrounding the issue needs to remain focused
on important matters.
“Let us not fall into the trap of letting the battle
between the Port of Belize Ltd and the Big
Creek Port be a battle between Stevedores and
Cane Farmers or about race, Creole versus
Persons of Spanish descent. There are bigger
fish to fry in this conversation and some serious
economic interests at the heart of the
conversation,” Taegar-Panton said in a
Facebook post.
She stressed that the stevedores and cane
farmers are either collateral beneficiaries or
collateral victims in this debacle, who stand to

either benefit or suffer from the situation, but
that the responsibility to safeguard the
livelihood of working Belizean men and women
ultimately rests with the Government of Belize.
