VOCABULARY 

   Forming adjectives

We can add suffixes to some nouns to make adjectives:

NOUN + SUFFIX = ADJECTIVE

 1 centre, music, nation -al central, musical, national

 2 beauty, care, help -ful beautiful, careful, helpful

 3 comfort, fashion -able comfortable, fashionable

 4 care, pain, use -less careless, painless, useless

 5 dirt, health, wind -y dirty, healthy, windy

 6 danger, fame -ous dangerous, famous

 7 patience, insistence -ent patient, insistent

 8 act, expense -ive active, expensive

VOCABULARY     changing the meaning of adjectives

We can use prefixes (short additions to the beginning of words) to change the
meaning of some adjectives. These prefixes usually mean "not".

PREFIX + ADJECTIVE = ADJECTIVE WITH NEGATIVE MEANING

1 dis- honest, loyal dishonest, disloyal

2 un- happy, tidy, usual unhappy, untidy, unusual

3 in- complete, correct, formal incomplete, incorrect, informal

4 im- patient, polite, possible impatient, impolite, impossible

5 ir- regular, responsible irregular, irresponsible

6 il- legal, literate, logical illegal, illiterate, illogical
