sneak out of the house to
meet with his friends. Jose,
as the older brother,
stopped Joaquin because
they are still under
quarantine. They are not
allowed to go out or else
they might get the virus and
be caught by the roaming
“tanod”. But Joaquin is so
hard headed. He did not
listen to his “kuya”. He
arrogantly answered back
that viruses are nonsense.
He even boasted that if he
got sick, it will easily fade
away because there is no
existing Covid-19 viruses in
their place, and thinking
that they should enjoy the
days without classes. But
his “kuya” insisted that
Joaquin has to stay home.
He told him what he have
watched and heard from
the news that staying at
home is the best prevention
from getting the virus. Also,
kids of their age are not yet
allowed to go outside. Still,
Joaquin questioned his
“kuya” why his friends can
go out while he cannot. He
was jealous with his friends
who enjoy playing
basketball. “Oooh poor
Joaquin, viruses are just
hearsays, your mom just
really doesn’t want you to
play with us. How poor the
people who keep on
wearing face mask and
face shield. Why should
they wash their hands with
soap that often? Just wet
your hands and it will be
clean! They are silly
people. There are no virus
existing in our place. This
was just a mere joke. Don’t
believe on them. Come on,
let’s play outside!”
Joaquin’s friends shouted
throughout their window.
Jose calmly explained to
Joaquin that it is very
important to gather facts
and should not easily
believe in hearsays or
“sabi-sabi”. It is best for
them to believe in news in
television because news
are more reliable and
based on facts. Newsmen
are gathering information
that are evident and real.
Jose also emphasized that
if Joaquin loves their mom,
he will not let his mom to
get worried when she finds
out that he is not at home.
Joaquin finally listened.
Few days later, Joaquin’s
friend that teased him was
brought to the hospital for
having a high fever and
some symptoms of the
Covid-19 disease. Joaquin
hugged his “kuya” for not
giving up on explaining to
him what might happen to
him if he insisted going out.
He then whispered to
Jose’s ears, “Thank you
kuya.” Did you enjoy
reading the short story?
Are you like Jose? Or
Joaquin? Just remember to
always check the
information you are
hearing. Does it describe a
fact image? Is it real?
Because often, believing in
facts might save you from
harm, just like what
happened to Joaquin. I
hope that this helped you
understand the situation we
are in now. You are at
home reading this, because
with Covid-19 virus that we
cannot see, it is safer for
you to be at home than to
be outside. So please listen
to your parents, guardians,
kuya, ate, tito, tita, lolo and
lola.

How to Identify: When a writer is

attempting to entertain or amuse the
reader they will use a variety of
techniques to engage their attention. They
may employ cliffhangers at the end of a
chapter, for example. They may weave
humour into their story, or even have
characters tell jokes. In the case of a
thriller, an action-packed scene may
follow an action-packed scene as the
drama builds to a crescendo. Think of the
melodrama of a soap opera here, rather
than the subtle touch of an art house
masterpiece.

When an author writes to entertain, they

want to interest the reader.

-Entertaining texts can be happy, sad, or

even spooky, but their primary purpose is
to draw the reader into the story.

-Texts that are written to entertain include

stories, poems, plays, and songs.
