All student projects must include a risk assessment. It is the responsibility of the supervisor
and the student to carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment prior to starting any work and
to reassess if plans and activities change. An assessment may be made for each activity or for
series of activities.

NOTE:
Project that include field work and Laboratory need to fill in the Risk Assessment –
Fieldwork form (UTB/RA5) and Risk Assessment – Laboratory form (UTB/RA3)

The Project Supervisor and Student must identify the hazards which may be present and state what
control measure they will be put in place to control the risk. Ensure you identify the controls needed.

Category A The risks associated with the work and/or the

must be supervised directly by a competent person.

Category B The risks associated with the work and/or the


inexperienced of the student are such that the work
may not be started without his/her supervisor
approval.

Category C The risks are such that the work requires considerable
care but it is considered that the student is adequately
trained and competent in the procedures involves.

Category D The risks are low and carry no special supervision


requirement
