NURSING RESEARCH
Introduction
In the field of nursing, nursing research is a systematic inquiry used by nurses that validates
and enhances existing knowledge and generate new information and concepts that established our
theories.

Try to read some other definitions of nursing research from other authors and answer the following
question:
1. From the different definitions of nursing research, what are the common points of view about
it?
Grove and Gray (2019) described nursing research as a systematic procedure that confirms
and enhance existing knowledge and creates a new knowledge that directly and indirectly impacts
clinical nursing practice.
Similarly, Polit and Beck (2006) came out with their definition of nursing research as a
scientific exploration intended to established knowledge about important nursing profession issues
in the nursing practice, education, administration, and informatics.
Nursing research can be a basis to test knowledge and serve as a guide to nursing practice
through examining questions and validating interventions based on human practices (Martinez;
National Center for Nursing Research, 1998).
Lastly, the Philippine Nurses Association committee on research stated that research is a
true scientific investigation designed for the purpose of learning new facts or to create new
relations amongst the existing facts to contribute in the current knowledge and can lead to an
effective solution of the current problem. Careful critical thinking should be taken into
consideration in revising the accepted conclusions, previous concepts and established principles.
Through nursing research, the lifespan, people with health problems and disabilities have
improved. It also helped in the ability of the individuals in responding effectively to actual or
potential health problems (Institute of Medicine, 1983).
The importance of nursing research also balances or help in the biomedical researches
whose concerned with the causes and treatments of diseases. Through these researches, life
expectancy has improved especially those suffering from serious injuries or terminal illness.
There are various types of nursing researches made in order to improve clinical
interventions to help those who require nursing care. Nursing research is complex and being broad
in scope often needs a scientific underpinning from various disciplines.
