Let’s begin by recalling the concepts learned from previous module.

Directions: Define the following terms based on your understanding.

Terminologies Definition

Lewis structure Diagrams that show the bonding

between atoms of a molecule
Covalent bond A chemical bond that involves the
sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
Lone pair Refers to a pair of valence electrons that
are not shared with another atom in a
covalent bond.
Bond pair A pair of electrons that are in a bond.

Single bond A chemical bond in which one pair of

electrons is shared between two atoms.
Double bond A chemical bond in which two pairs of
electrons are shared between two
atoms.
Triple bond A chemical bond in which three pairs of
electrons are shared between two
atoms.
Octet Rule This rule states that atoms tend to form
compounds in ways that give them eight
valence electrons.
Incomplete octet A stable molecule where the number of
electrons surrounding the central atom is
less than eight.
Expanded octet A stable molecule where the number of
electrons surrounding the central atom is
more than eight.
