CATHEDRAL PARISH OF ST. PAUL THE FIRST HERMIT
 SACRISTAN
- An officer charged with the care of the sacristy, the church and its content.
WHAT ARE THOSE CONTENT?
- Contents that are inside of the SACRISTY. The SACRISTY is a room for the Sacred objects.
WHERE DOES THE WORD SACRISTANS WORD?
- It came from the Medieval Latin called “Sacristanus” meaning “Custodians of Sacred
Objects”,
- in short if the word “Sacristy” meaning “The Room of the Sacred Objects”

 SEXTONS
- Is also a Church officer who are performing the same level of sacristans but Sextons are
paid, they are paid for the service that they are giving to the church and also the difference
of this two. The Sacristans is the person who maintain the sacristy and the sacred objects
it contains while Sextons is a church official who looks after its church and its grave yard
because from the old times the church does not have a convent they only have cemetery.
- Sextons are also grave diggers.
- when they have service they will become bell ringers.

 CAEREMONIALE ESPICOPORUM/ CEREMONIAL OF BISHOPS


- It prescribe that in cathedral and collegiate churches the sacristans should be a priest, and
describes his duties in regard to the sacristy, the Blessed Eucharist, the baptismal font, the
holy oils, the sacred relics, the decoration of the church for the different seasons and feast,
the preparation of what is necessary for the various ceremonies.
- The sacristan in old time were priest or lay person.
- It is the book that describe the church services to be performed by the bishops of the Latin
Rite of the Roman Catholic Church
- It was published by Pope Saint Clement VIII on July 14, 1600
- The first book to bear this name that we called Caeremoniale Episcoporum
- It says that the sacristans are priest because it needed a more knowledge about Liturgy and
the things that will be used inside the church.

 DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CATHEDRAL AND PARISHES


- The Cathedral contains the “CATHEDRA OF THE BISHOP” meaning it contains the “SEAT OF
THE BISHOP” and it is the center church of each Archdiocese or Diocese
- While the parish is the church that has no seat of the bishop, no cathedra of the bishop, it
has no Diocesan responsibility also.

- The Knights of the Altar is an organization of serving and former altar boys who serve our
Blessed Lord at His altar.
- As the knights of the altar, they sworn to serve God and defend the Catholic religion, by
showing:

 Pride
 Friendship
 Fellowship
 Strength
 Brotherhood

 And spirituality

- The Altar server is reminded of his duty to serve of the Lord of lords with fidelity and honor
- It was organized in September 1938, in response to many requests from priests, brothers
and nuns who felt the need of an organization that would aid them in solving the many
problems the encounter from time to time in directing an altar boy society.
