PIPE ROLLING MACHINE

Abstract: This research presents an efficient and functional pipe rolling machine that may
help not only the Pipe Fitters and Welding Trainers but also for those practitioners who are
in the industry to make their work easier in terms of pipe cutting, beveling and spool welding.
Based on the analysis of this research, the traditional way of rotating the pipe by hand when
beveling, cutting or welding is inconvenient and hazardous. Once a worker or trainee has to
rotate the pipe, he/she needs to remove the clamps and lift the pipe to position it again. The
worker or trainee needs to exert more effort and it consumes more time. The project carried
out by the researchers an impressing task in the field of pipefitting and construction
workshops. It meets the expected standards; is more effective and efficient to roll pipes for
cutting and beveling pipes compare to the traditional method.

A. INTRODUCTION:
Through the beginning of Industrial Revolution, the manufacturing of machines
significantly contributes to the improvement of work life. Pipe rolling as an important type of
metal forming process is used to deform pipes or tubes permanently for various applications.
While welding is the process of joining two materials like steel, aluminium, brass, stainless
steel, plastic or polymer and fusing them. Welder is the equipment used in welding. Molten
metal or plastic called filler is used to hold the pieces that are worked on, together.
Several studies presented that this type of process is convenient and simple, in the same
way, those pipes that were deformed in a wrong way can be corrected as well. On the other
hand, excess scrap materials produced will not be reused anymore. (Gemayel, K., 2020)
In this research, the learning facilitators tried to develop a machine on which both
grinding and rolling operations are performed. It aims to build a pipe rolling machine to
provide convenience on the different pipefitting activities such as pipe cutting, beveling and
spool welding and reduce the energy consumption while doing the activities. Through this
technology, this machine would be relevant and adapted to construction industry.

B. METHODS:
1. Project Design
1.1 Induction Motor
This is the most common electric motor in the world. This simple, reliable and
economical motor is found in refrigerators, washing machines and furnaces, as
well as conveyors, pumps, winders, wind tunnels and other industrial
equipment.
1.2 Speed Controller
An electronic speed control or ESC is an electronic circuit that controls and
regulates the speed of an electric motor. It may also provide reversing of the
motor and dynamic braking.
1.3 Pillow Block Bearing
It is a pedestal that is used to prove support for a rotating shaft with
compatible bearings.
1.4 Sprocket Gear and Chain
Chain and sprocket drives are used to perform three basic functions:
transmitting power, conveying materials, and for timing purposes. Chain and
sprocket drives are used to transmit power from one component to another.

1.5 Heavy duty caster wheels
These are utilized in the aerospace and aircraft manufacturing process to move
large work pieces, assemblies and equipment.
1.6 Fan Belt
A fan belt connects the engine cooling fan to the alternator and crankshaft
pulley.
1.7 Angle Bars
It provides structural support to columns and beams and gives additional
strength and stability in the overall framing.
1.8 Bolts and Nuts
This two partners are kept together by a combination of their threads' friction.
1.9 Lacquer Spray Paints
It is a clear or colored coating that gives the illusion of depth.
1.10 Stainless Tube
It is used for transmitting motion or power.

2. Project Development
The researchers have undergone different activities in the developing of the
project. The activities involved are as follows:
2.1 Identifying the required materials for the project
2.2 Creating a ideal model and framing for the project
2.3 Constructing the frame according to the working drawing
2.4 Drilling holes for the mounting of pillows blocks and drive motor
2.5 Mounting of pillow blocks, shafts and drive motor

Actual Machine Development

The selection of material and its cost plays an important part in this technical
research and should not be disregarded. In aligned with that, the cost of the entire
production ranges 35, 000 pesos and the supplies and material needed are locally
available either at store or online. The timeframe of developing the project takes one
month including the selection and procurement of the materials.
3. Operation and Testing Procedure
Before the initial testing of the machine, the researchers assured that the machine
will work according to the expected standards and limitations. During the testing, the
machine functions on form based on its actual purpose and work smoothly and
efficiently.

4. Evaluation Procedure:
The proponent of this research used the approved evaluation form used by the
research team to evaluate the developed technology package. The original form was
converted into Google form and sent the link to everyone who have used and inspected
the equipment.
The form was divided into four areas of concentration for evaluation: 1. Materials,
2. Design, 3. Effectiveness and Functionality and lastly 4. Safety. It will be evaluated in
its subcategories by rating them as: 5- Highly Acceptable, 4- Acceptable, 3- Moderately
Acceptable, 2- Fairly Acceptable and 1- Unacceptable. The proponent will get the
average rating (mean) for every category and from it; they will determine the result
based on its interpretation.

C. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION


1. Project Description
The machine is intended to rotate the pipe for beveling and welding. The pipe
may rotate either by the power of electricity or manually once the electricity is not
available. To rotate the pipe by power, the lever must be disconnected to the shaft by
removing the chain from the sprocket gear and set the speed using the speed controller
and turn on the switch. To rotate the pipe manually, there should be the use of the crank
lever that is connected to a sprocket gear using a chain. This lever causes the stainless
shaft which leads the pipe to rotate.

Features:
The Pipe Rolling Machine is
powered by 1.5 HP single phase AC
motor. But it can also be operated
manually by using the crank lever in case
there is power interruption or the machine
is to be used in areas where electricity is
not available.
Size: The machine has an overall
dimension of 80cm x 86 cm x 84 cm.

3. Project Capabilities and Limitations
The Pipe Rolling Machine can only hold and rotate pipes ranging from 12”
diameter and length of 1 foot to 8 feet long. It is a convenient and smaller version of the
machine compare to the other products that are available in well-established industries.

4. Project Evaluation
The Google Form link (see link on: https://forms.gle/cnCS4vtu698yKmzq6) for
its evaluation has been sent to different respondents who have used the said technology
package as end-users. It is also sent to trainers who are experts in electronics,
Mechatronics and electrical who will be the technical experts in evaluating the
technology package. As for its evaluation gathered from the evaluation instrument tool
uploaded using Google Form by its proponents, they have found out that: As for the
materials, it gains an average mean of 4.66 which can be interpreted as Highly
Acceptable; for the design it is evaluated with the average mean of 4.76 which can be
interpreted also as Highly Acceptable; for its effectiveness and functionality it receives
an average mean of 4.74 also interpreted as Highly Acceptable; and lastly for safety it
is rated with the average mean of 4.70 which can be interpreted as Highly Acceptable.
To sum up the evaluation for “Pipe Rolling Machine”, the said technology package
receives an over-all average mean of 4.72 which is considered as HIGHLY
ACCEPTABLE.

D. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION


1. Conclusions
Based on the results, the following conclusions made are…
1.1 The project carried out by the researchers an impressing task in the field of
pipefitting and construction workshops.
1.2 It meets the expected standards; is very effective and efficient to roll pipes for
cutting and beveling pipes.
1.3 With the use of this machine, the finished output of beveling is more accurate
compared to traditional method.
1.4 It is safer and convenient to use.
1.5 It saves time and effort in rolling the pipe from time to time.
2. Recommendations
Based on the conclusion of this project, the pipe rolling machine is highly
recommended as an instructional equipment for pipefitting and welding trainings.
