APOGEE 2021-22

Robo-lympics - ASME BITS Pilani

TASK:
Teams must create a manually operated bot that can perform simple tasks such as
grasping objects and placing them in target zones for it to complete the course while
avoiding the obstacles in its way.
The terrain will be mostly flat with random zig-zag pathways mostly to judge on
manoeuvre abilities. There will be a few speed breakers and obstacles that need to be
avoided.

SPECIFICATIONS OF BOT:
1. The dimensions of the bot should be less than or equal to 30 cm × 20 cm × 30
cm (l×b×h) failing which the team will be disqualified from the competition (this
excludes the dimension of the gripper but includes tyres). The bot, on the other
hand, can expand its dimensions after the race has begun. An error of (±5% ) is
permitted.
2. The dimensions of the remote are not included in the size constraint of the bot.
3. The bot must be controlled manually only by one person, irrespective of the
mechanism used.
4. Both wired and wireless control options are available to teams. In the case of
wired bots, the wire length should be at least 2 meters to ensure that the cable
remains slack at all times. Participants should use a dual-frequency remote,
Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi if they employ wireless technologies.
5. The bot must have an onboard power supply in any case.
6. Participants are not permitted to use any prefabricated Lego parts or grasping
mechanisms. Participants may, however, use pre-assembled gear assemblies.
7. If any of the aforementioned requirements are not met, you will be disqualified
immediately.
POWER SUPPLY:
The participants should use an onboard electric or non-electric power supply, i.e. the
power source should be on the bot itself. The power supply should be environmentally
friendly and should meet the organisers' safety requirements. Participants must obtain
prior approval from the organisers through email in the case of non-electric power
supply. If the approval is not requested, the organisers are not liable for the
inconvenience. In case of an electric power supply, the voltage between any two points
should be less than or equal to 24V DC at all times during the run.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:

1. The bot should be checked for safety before starting the run.
2. As mentioned earlier, only one team member would be allowed to control the
bot. None of the other team members apart from the one controlling the bot
would be allowed to enter the arena.
3. Except for small modifications in the Deposit Zone, the bot is not allowed to
slide objects against the ground.
4. The arena features two checkpoints (1,2): if the bot gets stuck somewhere, the
things it's carrying (if any) will be repositioned at their original location, and the
bot will be held at the checkpoint corresponding to that zone. There will be no
additional penalty as a result of this.
5. The countdown will not be stopped until the object is completely deposited
inside its Deposit Zone, and the organizer's decision will be final and binding in
the event of any disagreements or discrepancies.
6. The organisers reserve the right to amend any or all of the above rules as they
see fit, and any such changes will be noted on the website and communicated to
registered teams through email.
GAMEPLAY:

1. The bot must begin at the 'START' mark (the bot's back end must contact the
Start line).
2. Object 1 must be picked up by the bot from start of zone A and must be dropped
between zone A and B.
3. The bot must get to end of zone B without any object.
4. Object 2 must be picked up from the start of zone C and should be dropped off
between zones C and D.
5. The bot should be able to cross zone D, which included a gap between two ramps.
6. At the end of zone D, the bot will pick up object 3 and drop it off between zones
E and F.
7. The bot must manoeuvre through the banking in zone F without falling/toppling.
8. Each team will be given three runs. If the team chooses to run again, the points
from its final run will be taken into account.

JUDGING CRITERIA:
1. For successfully picking up each of the objects in one go, you will receive 10
points (2 or more tries will result in no points).
2. For correctly placing each of the objects completely inside their corresponding
Deposit Zones, 20 points will be rewarded.
3. For successfully crossing zones A and E, the bot will be awarded 10 points each.
4. Similarly, for zones B, D and F, 20 points each would be given.
5. For successfully crossing zone C, the bot would be awarded 30 points.
6. A penalty of 5 points will be issued everytime the bot touches any of the
obstacles.
7. Each time one of the bot's tyres crosses the track's limits while traversing, a
penalty of 10 points will be applied.
8. If the bot fails to cross any of the zones or gets stuck in between, it will be given
two options:
a. Pay a penalty of 10 points and claim the checkpoint.
b. Start from the beginning as a new attempt.
THE TRACK:
Altogether, there are six zones - A, B, C, D, E and F.
There are two checkpoints - 1 and 2, Checkpoint 1 is between zone B and C and
checkpoint 2 is between zone D and E.

Zone A - Pile of Coarse Sand

Zone B - Steep Bridge with a Pothole of Water underneath it (the bot may use either of
these modalities to cross the zone, i.e. it will have a choice to go either through the
bridge or through the water. The motor should be powerful enough for the same.)
Zone C - Element of Surprise (if your bot is capable enough to cross the other five
zones, it will ease past this zone as well)
Zone D - Ramp (an incline and a decline ramp with space between them, the bot should
have enough speed to jump it through)
Zone E - Strips of standing tall grass (the bot would have to manoeuvre through it).
Zone F - Banking of Road at Curvature (the bot should have enough speed to cross the
banking or else it will fall/topple).

EVENT REQIREMENTS:
The participants must participate in teams of 2-7 members. Inter college teams are
allowed. The participants will be required to be physically present with their robots/bots
at BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus during APOGEE, to participate in the event.
