LEE RYDER'S REACTION

TO STEVE BRUCE LEAVING
NEWCASTLE

Hello, and welcome to our live coverage

following the news Steve Bruce has left
Newcastle United.

The Magpies head coach has been

relieved of his duties after days of
intense speculation following the
takeover last week.

Bruce was appointed as Rafa Benitez's

successor in the summer of 2019, and
guided the Magpies to 13th and 12th-
placed finishes in his two full seasons
in charge.

However, the 60-year-old's tenure has

consistently been marred by fan unrest
and criticism, and United are yet to
record a win in the current campaign.

The bookmakers have offered markets

on Bruce's replacement for several
days, with a host of high-profile names
linked to the post.

We will have all of the updates and

reaction to this breaking story as it
happens below.

Paulo Fonseca has emerged as the
leading contender to be named as the
next Newcastle United manager after
Steve Bruce's departure on Wednesday
morning.

The 60-year-old leaves with the

Magpies currently second bottom in
the Premier League having failed to win
any of their opening eight matches.

During his time at the club, Bruce won

just 28 of his 97 matches in charge and
the 3-2 defeat against Tottenham
Hotspur proved to be his final game at
the helm.

Graeme Jones has been appointed on

an interim basis and is set to take
charge of this weekend's game at
Crystal Palace, with Steve Agnew,
Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and
Simon Smith joining his coaching staff.

However, a number of different

coaches have been linked with
replacing Bruce and becoming the
permanent replacement as Newcastle
look to steer themselves out of a
relegation battle.

Alan Shearer responds to

Steve Bruce departure
Alan Shearer has thanked Steve Bruce
for keeping Newcastle United up and
conceded that the head coach was
working in difficult circumstances.

Bruce left United after just over two

years in charge by mutual consent, as
the new owners look to appoint a
manager capable of taking the club out
of the relegation zone.

Newcastle are 19th in the Premier

League and are still without a win this
season and Bruce's 1000th game in
management, and the new owners first
in charge of the club, turned out to be
his last at the Magpies after a 3-1
defeat to Spurs.

Many had expected Bruce not to take

control of that match but with the
takeover moving at such a quick pace,
he was afforded a final outing in the
dugout.

'Steve Bruce first to

know' in painful process
of how Newcastle
manager's learned their
fate
Steve Bruce knew the writing was on
the wall as Newcastle United boss.

Despite two seasons in which he

finished well clear of the relegation
zone, 12th and 13th, as well as two cup
runs to the last eight of the FA Cup and
League Cup respectively, new owners
were always going to have their own
ideas.

However, even had Mike Ashley stayed,

United's precarious Premier League
position, with no wins in eight matches,
would have left them with a straight-
forward decision.

Bruce knew it was coming and as

Amanda Staveley had pledged just a
few days ago, he was the first to learn
of his fate.

On a morning of intense speculation

that former AS Roma boss Paulo
Fonseca would replace him, the media
were informed at 10.30am that Bruce
had gone by "mutual consent" with
Graeme Jones replacing him as
caretaker boss.

The leading contenders to

take over at Newcastle
Newcastle United have parted
company with Steve Bruce after a
dismal start to the Premier League
campaign.

Saturday's defeat to Tottenham

Hotspur was the first opportunity for
Yasir Al-Rumayyan's, the Magpies new
chairman, to take stock of the task at
hand since taking over the club.

Former AS Roma manager Paulo

Fonseca has emerged as the early
favourite to take over at the Magpies,
while Eddie Howe and Lucien Favre are
also among the front runners.

Newcastle's new owners have the first

major decision of their new era with
Graeme Jones set to take interim
charge of the club.

Gary Lineker sums up

Newcastle's Steve Bruce
decision with four-word
verdict
BBC's Match of the Day presenter and
ex-England striker Gary Lineker has
taken to Twitter to have his say on
Steve Bruce's dismissal from Newcastle
United.

Bruce was sacked after two-and-a-half

years at St James' Park as the new
Saudi-led consortium look to make
changes at the club in order to kick
start a new era.

Many were surprised to see Bruce in

the dugout for Sunday's defeat to
Tottenham Hotspur, his 1,000th game
in management.

And Lineker was quick to express his

sarcasm to the situation as he tweeted:
"Newcastle have fired Steve Bruce.
Never saw that coming."

Steve Bruce decision is

the right one - and
owners are ready to make
positive call next
It was the right decision and it has
been taken not a moment too soon.

At any other club Steve Bruce would

have left his post at several junctures
last season. But the dysfunction of
Mike Ashley's Newcastle - a ghost ship
being ridden towards a sale - preserved
his status and allowed him the brief
revival that his band of supporters
claimed was vindication for some of
the worst football United fans have
witnessed for decades.

The new owners might have endured a

tornado on Tyneside since taking over
a fortnight ago but they knew his
position was untenable. They handled
relations with Bruce well last week and
the man himself praised their
approach. But it was only a matter of
time.

were clear: Bruce was on his way. It's
understood there has been definitive
progress with other candidates -
former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca
figures highly on their wishlist. They
have ascertained who wants it and
who doesn't. They're ready to make a
move.

bringing to an end a turbulent era in
which he clashed with media and
supporters as his boyhood dream
