NEW CITY

presbyterian church

AUGUST 7, 2022
WELCOME TO NEW CITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

New City is a collection of people of all ages and professions, from a wide variety of spiritual
and social backgrounds. We embrace Jesus’ claims to be true and transformational. We
also believe the central message of the Bible is the good news, or “gospel,” of a God who
created us for Himself and desires us to live fully as we enjoy relationship with Him and
with each other.

The Bible’s radical message of grace centers on Jesus and creates a new city comprised
of renewed individuals living not for themselves but for the God who redeems. For this
reason, New City exists to be a community rooted in truth, real in conversation, and hopeful
for deep renewal in our lives and our city.

It is our privilege to welcome you and to invite you to be astonished, together with us, by
the splendor and grace of God.

NEW CITY VISION & VALUES

To be a church in awe of God,

made new by the gospel, for the sake of all people.

Our vision leads us to hold closely three values that shape our life and ministry as a church:

ROOTED CONVICTION in the truths of God’s Word

REAL CONVERSATION as we engage the gospel, culture, and each other
RENEWAL OF THE CITY as we live and do life in relationship with God

1

We won’t fear the battle; we won’t fear the night
We will walk the valley, with You by our side
You will go before us; You will lead the way
We have found a refuge, only You can save

Sing with joy now: our God is for us

The Father’s love is a strong and mighty fortress
Raise your voice now, no love is greater
Who can stand against us if our God is for us

Even when I stumble, even when I fall

Even when I turn back, still Your love is sure
You will not abandon, You will not forsake
You will cheer me onward with never ending grace

Neither height nor depth can separate us

Hell and death will not defeat us
He who gave His Son to free us
Holds us in His love

The Prayer of Invocation

is a humble yet earnest PRAYER OF INVOCATION
calling upon God to
reveal Himself and
bless us as we gather
to worship.

ALL HYMN OF FAITH Christ Our Hope In Life And Death

CCLI #7147502

What is our hope in life and death? What truth can calm the troubled soul?
Christ alone, Christ alone. God is good, God is good.
What is our only confidence? Where is His grace and goodness known?
That our souls to Him belong. In our great Redeemer’s blood.
Who holds our days within His hand? Who holds our faith when fears arise?
What comes, apart from His command? Who stands above the stormy trial?
And what will keep us to the end? Who sends the waves that bring us nigh
The love of Christ, in which we stand. Unto the shore, the rock of Christ?

O sing hallelujah! Unto the grave, what shall we sing?

Our hope springs eternal; “Christ, He lives; Christ, He lives!”
O sing hallelujah! And what reward will heaven bring?
Now and ever we confess Everlasting life with Him.
Christ our hope in life and death. There we will rise to meet the Lord,
Then sin and death will be destroyed,
And we will feast in endless joy,
When Christ is ours forevermore.

He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5
Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,

“As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
7
I will tell of the decree:
The LORD said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
8
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
9
You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
10
Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.

Serve the LORD with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.

Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

ALL CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Because of the gospel, Almighty and gracious Father, Your Word says that You have given us the mind of Christ
our relationship with
God is a relationship in so that we can think Your thoughts and do Your deeds; Forgive us for allowing worldly-
which honesty about mindedness to creep in. We confess that anxiety and fear rule us rather than Your peace.
our sin is welcome and
safe. Therefore, with We acknowledge that envy and greed fill us rather than Your love. We lament that a
one voice, we are able spirit of despair rests upon us instead of a fruitful and transformative faith. Forgive and
to openly and sincerely
confess our sins to Him. transform us so that many would see Jesus in us, and be drawn to Him as Savior and Lord.
We prayer in His saving name, Amen.

Though the nations rage, kingdoms rise and fall
There is still one King reigning over all
So I will not fear for this truth remains:
That my God is the Ancient of Days

None above Him, none before Him

All of time in His hands
For His throne it shall remain and ever stand
All the power, all the glory
I will trust in His name
For my God is the Ancient of Days

Though the dread of night overwhelms my soul

He is here with me, I am not alone
O His love is sure, and He knows my name
For my God is the Ancient of Days

Though I may not see what the future brings

I will watch and wait for the Savior King
Then my joy complete standing face to face
In the presence of the Ancient of Days

ALL SENDING HYMN The Lord Is King
Josiah Conder, Nathan Partain.
1824, Public Domain
CCLI #4855411
The Lord is King! Lift up your voice,
O earth, and all ye heavens, rejoice!
From world to world the joy shall ring,
“The Lord omnipotent is King!”

Sing His praise, sing His praise

Lord of lords, Ancient of Days
Sing His praise, sing His praise
All your days, all your days.

The Lord is King! Who then shall dare

Resist His will, distrust his care?
Or murmur at His wise decrees,
Or doubt His royal promises?

One Lord, one kingdom, all secures;

He reigns, and life and death are yours:
Through Heaven and earth one song shall ring,
“The Lord omnipotent is King!”

Our gathered worship

service concludes with
BENEDICTION
God’s blessing; a joyful
declaration of God’s
satisfaction in us through
Jesus Christ, and a vow
to be in fellowship with
us as we scatter.

WORSHIPPING WITH LITTLE ONES
What a joy and privilege to worship with children! Worship is a communal activity in which we
participate together as a church family and is one of the best ways to welcome children into the life
of the church. Yet, children are in the process of learning the significance of worship and how to
worship. During times in which we offer Nursery and Kids Bible Time, teachers emphasize why we
worship and help children learn prayers and songs that are typically part of our services. However,
during our season of Worship On The Lawn, there are ways parents and congregants alike can aid
our children in the joys of worship.

FOR PARENTS:
Parents have the responsibility and blessing to lead and train children in worship. Consider the tips
below to help you in this process:
• Start Saturday night by looking at the worship bulletin (newcitypc.org/live) and practicing songs that will
be sung. Prepare a backpack or one of our New City Kids’ totes with a notebook, markers, play-doh, and
other tools that can help your child engage the worship service.

• Children–and adults!–can concentrate and hear better if they sit up front. Consider using a pic-nic
blanket if they need some space to move around.

• Worship with rather than beside children. Help your child who can’t read by singing the words of the
chorus in their ears so they can sing along.

• Help them follow along in the Bible. Point out words for young or non-readers that are repetitive.

• Allow children to participate in offering by sharing their allowance.

• Whisper instructions or comments such as, “Now is the time when we tell God how great He is.”

FOR THE REST OF US:

Church is not for adults only. Supporting the children of New City as they grow as worshippers of
the Lord is the responsibility of us all.
• Remember the commitment you made as a church when children were baptized, a commitment to
encourage them to become disciples of Christ.

• Introduce yourself to the child sitting beside you. Make him or her feel welcomed and important.

• Have patience with the learning process and pray for families.

• Compliment children who are listening attentively during the service.

• Consider providing encouragement and support for single mothers or children with special needs.

• As we worship, look around. Can we make the experience easier for the families learning how to worship?

Teaching children how to worship the Lord with reverence and awe is something we can all be
excited about doing. What a blessing and privilege is this special endeavor!
