Epsilon Biplane Configuration EPS 45-80 High-Voltage Generator

1 INTRODUCTION

The Biplane configuration for the Epsilon generator consists of two

linked EPS 45-80 High-Voltage generators operated from a single
operator console. The two generators are enclosed in single decorative
and protective cabinets. The generator on which the console is connected
is considered the master plane, or Plane 1, and is installed on the floor.
The second generator is the slave plane, or Plane 2, and is installed
directly over the master generator (Figure 1).

Figure 1 – Biplane Configuration

Master and Slave Generators
Stacked and enclosed in Biplane Cabinet.

When assembled, the two generators and cabinets will be stacked one over
the other so perfectly that the final biplane system would appear as a single
cabinet (Figure 1).
The biplane configuration allows making exposures on two planes
simultaneously. Acquiring images from two different perspectives at the
same time provides X-ray images with a 3D-rendering. Both planes can be
used as single and independent X-ray devices, too.
The layout for the biplane configuration is diagrammed in Figure 2 below and will be detailed later
in the installation procedure.

4 INTERFACING

Refer to Chapter 3 of your Technical Manual to connect the different equipment to their respective
Epsilon High-Voltage generators.

4.1 PREP/RAD Switch for Biplane Workstation

To initiate the exposure mechanism on both planes at the same time, simply use the console PREP
& RAD push-buttons. To do it using a remote footswitch, connect a dual pole exposure switch on
J12 (Controller) or J2 (Fluoro PMT board P/N 9822.00) as shown in Figure 10, and enable the
exposure switch on both biplane workstations, as detailed in System Setup (Section 5).

4.2 Trigger for Biplane Workstation

It is recommended to use the same trigger for workstations working in biplane operation. One plane
could be triggered on the rising edge, the other plane on the falling edge of the trigger. Refer to
System Setup (Section 5) to configure the trigger activation and the workstation setup.

If different triggers are used to expose in biplane mode, make sure they are synchronized such that
the exposure sequences are alternated on the planes, not superimposed.

Figure 10 – Remote Footswitch Interfacing on a Biplane System.

4.3 Interlocks
On biplane workstations, the exposure mechanism on both planes won't start until all interlock
conditions are satisfied on both EPS generators. When an "X-ray On interlock" type is used on one
of the plane, if the interlock signal comes inactive during the exposure, the exposure will be
interrupted on that plane only.

4.4 Programmable I/Os

Outputs assigned to F1 through F3 function keys are valid for the master plane only.

5 SYSTEM SETUP & CALIBRATION

Both EPS 45-80 High-Voltage generators have their own Epsilon PC Tools configuration files.
Keep a backup of the two configuration files. Refer to Chapter 4 of your Technical Manual to
perform the system setup.

5.1 Create Two Configuration Files and Enable Biplane Functionality

1. Open the Epsilon PC Tools with the operator console set in Service Mode.

2. In the menu bar:

a. Select Transfer/Connect to enable the communication.
b. Select View/Options to invoke the Options configuration screen. This screen shows up
software and hardware options available for the active EPS generator plane. Select “Biplane
Enabled” in the hardware options (Figure 11).

Figure 11 – Epsilon PC Tools Options Configuration.

The Biplane option will function only if both EPS generator are linked using the Biplane Cable (J7 to J7).

3. In the menu bar, select File /Save as to save the emd file for the Master plane (plane 1). Use
"Plane-1.emd" filename or any relevant filename.

Document 11050.002.G4 14

4. In the menu bar, select Tools /Set Active Plane/Plane 2 to

toggle the active plane. Use the “Save As” command to save a
configuration file for the second plane (plane 2). Use "Plane-
2.emd" filename or any relevant filename.

5. In View/Options /hardware options (Figure 11), enable the biplane functionality (“; Biplane
Enabled”) for the second plane.

6. Save the new file.

5.2 Workstation Setup

1. Refer to your technical manual to continue the configuration of both generators using the
appropriate emd file for each plane. Be sure to make the configuration of the Plane 1 generator
using the Plane-1 emd file and vice versa. When the configuration is done on a generator, send
it to the corresponding plane by using the "Send to" command. Do the same for the other
plane (Figure 12).

Figure 12 – Epsilon PC Tools "Transfer" and "File" Menus.

2. To set up a biplane workstation, enable the same workstation on both generators (; Enable
W.S., Figure 13). You can use a distinct workstation name to facilitate the display of the
respective plane on the operator console by entering a different name in the name zone for
each workstation. It is usually best to set biplane workstation as default workstation on both
generators (; Default W.S., Figure 13).

3. When Fluoro is intended for biplane mode, enable Fluoro on both generators (; Enable
Fluoro, Figure 13).

4. It is also recommended, for a given biplane workstation, to set up the same frame rate and run
length selections for both planes.

5.4 Fluoro Setup (For RF systems)

When Fluoro is intended for biplane mode, Fluoro must be configured on both generators. It is
recommended for triggering Pulsed Fluoro to use the same source of trigger, but reverse the
polarity. Use the same frame rate selections for both planes.

5.5 APR Setup

When Anatomically Programmed Radiology is intended in biplane mode, it is recommended to have
a similar APR exam structure for both paired biplane workstations. For instance, the same exams on
both generator workstations should be done using the same frame rate and run length.

5.6 Field Calibration

Refer to Chapter 5 of your Technical Manual to perform this section for both planes. When specific
calibration or adjustment is done using the Operator Console service mode, the calibration is done
on the first plane first, then it is repeated on the second plane by selecting that plane using the
“Plane Toggle” key (3) on the console. The plane that is in focus is lit on the tube number lamp.
