THE COST OF CULTURAL IGNORANCE (FORUM & DISCUSSION)

A. Does Cultural Differences really affect good communication?

 Culture is a term that refers to a huge variety set of intangible aspects of our social life, it consists of
language, rules, habits, lifestyles, attitudes, beliefs, and other customs that connect and provide a
sense of identity to a group of individuals. There are actually times that we are too afraid to indulge
ourselves to a conversation, there is often the feeling of fear around different cultures, we are always
thinking what manners are acceptable and not. What are the actions that will possibly offend an
individual from a different culture? But based on my observation and understanding, cultural differences
does not affect having a good communication with the people around you especially if both parties are
informed with the cultural differences that they both have.

B. What is cultural Sensitivity in the context of a Dominant Culture?

 Cultural Sensitivity is being aware and knowledgeable enough to know, accept, and recognize that we
all have cultural differences and similarities, that we all have a unique culture. Cultural Sensitivity is
being able to recognize and accept that our culture is no better than any other culture around us, it is
the ability to respect and understand the differences that we all have in our society. In the context of a
Dominant Culture, cultural sensitivity might be difficult for some of them and that is completely based on
my observation. Even if we are in the modern times, it is still difficult for them to be able to accept and
recognize that we are all equal despite of our cultural differences.
