TOPIC: Plate Tectonics

LEARNING COMPETENCY: The learners should be able to describe the distribution of active volcanoes,
earthquake epicentre, and major mountain belts.

Activity No. 1
Locating Earthquakes Epicenter
I. OBJECTIVE:

1. Identify the location of an earthquake epicenter using the travel time graph and triangulation
method.

II. LESSON OVERVIEW

On July 16, 1990 at around 4:26 p.m. a major earthquake struck the island of Luzon in the Philippines
with the estimated magnitude of 7.7 and caused damage and lost of lives in the area. Among the areas
hardest hit by the 1990 Luzon earthquake was the summer destination of Baguio. All types of building
including hotels, resorts, and government and university buildings suffered from tremendous damage.
Collapsing of the buildings were the main cause of damage and death of people. Tremendous damage
from the earthquake was widespread all over the island of Luzon and the actual earthquake’s epicenter
was reported immediately. The epicenter of this earthquake was detected at the province of Nueva
Ecija. How could geologist identify the main epicenter of the earthquake? Let’s find it out here using
the triangular method. This method is used by geologist to detect the earthquake epicenter. They
collected records of seismograms from three distinct stations to identify the location of the epicenter.

A.MATERIALS:

Hypothetical records of three statation of seismograms and travel-time curves

III. PROCEDURE:

1. Study the three seismograms and travel-time curves from each of the stations that are shown
below. Interpret the seismograms to find the distance from each station to the epicenter.

Distance from the epicenter: 189 km_______________

Distance from the epicenter: _______________
Distance from the epicenter: 195 km
2. Using the known distance to the epicenter from three different locations, draw circles around
each of the recording provinces
Distance withepicenter:

km (Note: Use the scale 1.5 cm: 100 km).
3. Each circle should have a radius equal to the epicenter distance that you calculated.
4. The place where the three circles intersect is the epicenter location.

IV. ANALYSIS:

Q1. Where is the epicenter of the hypothetical earthquake?

The epicenter of the earthquake is in ilo-ilo

Q2. What difficulty will you encounter if you only have data from two seismograms?

The difficulty will be hard because I need to find the data and the distance

Q3. Refer to the third graph that shows travel-time curves in the province of Batangas. The travel-
time curves shows that the P-S wave interval is about 5 minutes. What is the distance of the epicenter
from the seismogram?

The distance is 295 km

Q4. What do you think is the importance of determining the epicenter of an earthquake?

The siesmogram

V. GENERALIZATION:

Create a triangle and divide it horizontally into three sections. At the bottom section, write three (3)
things you have learned for the day. At the middle section, write two questions you have in mind that
need an answer. At the top section, write information learned which are applicable to your daily lives.

Knowing
the
earthquake

1. What should I do
during an earthquake

2. how can we survive

1.How to determain the epicenter of the earthquake

2.How to get the distance of the earthquake
3.Determining the epicenter of the earthquake using a
wedge method

VI. APPLICATION:
