CALA context/ Background

Vinegar contains ethanoic acid and ethanoic acid is classified as a weak acid. Ethanoic acid is an

example of an organic acid. Vinegar have got many household uses. Company X wants to venture
into the business of producing vinegar for house hold use. As a the company chemist you are
required to device a method to determine the amount of ethanoic acid present in different brands
of vinegar found in the local grocery shops.

CALA description:

The CALA consist of two parts thus PART A and PART B which adds up to 50 marks.
PART A: Knowledge and understanding
Research on: chemical properties
Give a brief background of the method that you are going to use to analyse the vinegar brands of
your choice. Include theory on chemical properties of acids. [15]
PART B: Experimental and investigation skills.

Give a layout of the method that you are going to use to analyse different brands of vinegars of
your choice. Your methods will include the following heardings.

 Clear, safe and correct investigation procedure using appropriate apparatus and chemicals.
 Making observations and showing method of recording findings.

CALA TIPS

 During your investigation make sure you observe social distance mask up and sanitise to
avoid contacting and spreading covid 19.
 ensure safe methods and procedures to avoid damage to equipment, causing harm to
others and yourself.
 Make use of various data presentations methods like tables, graphs, pie charts etc
 make use of various chemistry textbooks and the internet to find appropriate information
on chemical properties of acids and experimental techniques.
