The transformation of Argentina 0
0
Although Argentina has been ruled off and on by military dictators since 1
the 1930s, the military regime of March 1976 represents an entirely new form of
domination, both in terms of the scale, scope, and duration of repression. Never 2
has the Argentine working class been subject to the level of terror and sustained 3
attack that it has experienced during the regime of General Videla, who seized 45
power in a coup in 1976. The singular effort by the military, paramilitary, and police 6
forces to abolish all forms of political opposition has produced an unprecedented 7
level of political assassinations, jailings, and exiles: more than 30.000 deaths and 8
disappearances, thousands of jailings, hundreds of thousands of exiles, tens of 9
thousands tortured, mutilated, and disfigured. Practically everyone in Argentina 10
has direct personal ties with at least someone affected by the repression. 11
Moreover, millions of Argentine workers and salaried employees have seen their 12
political parties, trade unions, and community and social service organizations 13
intervened and / or closed down - thus eliminating all the organization that had 14
been created over the past fifty years. The regime of 1976 has set in motion forces 15
and policies that are uprooting institutions and relationship established through the 16
greater part of the twentieth century. In that precise historic context we cannot 17
consider this a "conservative" or "traditional" dictatorship. 18
