Sherlock Holmes – The Final Problem

- doctor = started to write in his practice (=bored moments)
- got inspired by every day facts
- invented the genre / detective novels = created suspense, need to know more, active role for the
reader
- victim of his own creation: couldn’t move on = was forced to bring SH back to like (pressure + death
threats)

Stories :
- published in a weekly newspaper = chapters / suspense
-chapters: quick + easy to read + understandable by everyone
- S Holmes : amazing detective / witty and more clever than police
- inspired from real places + facts (ex: Jack the Ripper)
- newspapers left behind when already read = accessible for the poor (who couldn’t afford to buy it)

Sherlock Holmes:
- clever / competent / brilliant
- more skilled that police (Scotland Yard; lacks experience) / public: little trust in police
- detective / acts on his own
- solves problems / cases
- helps / really cares (social class: not important)
- brings hope
- key figure

readers:
- play active role (1st time)
- relate to the characters + story (ex: real places in London)
- are transported in the story
- feel emotions + need to know more (ex: shocked, ill-at-ease, relieved; scared)
- started to need SH in their real life = didn’t accept his death

Moriarty:
- villain (cf murderers like Jack the Ripper)
- only appears in the last book: only one capable of defeating S H
- exposes himself when speaks to SH
- put pressure on SH to stop looking for him / threatens him

vocab:
chapter 7: Chapter 8:
trade = exchange a dash= - ; sth very fast/ racing
merely = just ; only bludgeon= walking stick
(to) rise (rose/ risen) = to go up, like the sun knuckles= part of the fist used to punch
(to) trod= stamp; crush with your feet (to) shatter: break+ explode into little pieces
pity = shame bark= sounds made by dogs ; sth explosive
the latter= the last idea/noun introduced in a shutters: panels outside windows closed for
sentence privacy
