Objective: Identify and explain the visual-verbal relationship illustrated in bar graphs.
Discussion:
A bar graph is a chart or graph that presents categorical data with rectangular bars with heights or lengths
proportional to the values that they represent. The bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. A vertical bar chart
is sometimes called a column chart.
Activity:
1. Write the number of vegetables at the top of each bar. See the example.
2. If Jimmy grows 3 more bell peppers, how many will he have grown in total?
3. How many more bell peppers will Jimmy need to grow to equal his corn crop?
4. How many more cabbages will Jimmy need to grow to equal his carrot crop? Draw this in pencil on the
graph.
