Passive Acoustic Feeding Control

in Shrimp Aquaculture

“AQ1 Systems is dedicated to creating technology which increases

productivity and reduces environmental impact in Aquaculture.”
WHY SONIC FEEDING? - Traditional feeding method relies on
human
- Good feeding requires a lot of
experience, attention, and hard-work
- Bad feeding will require even more
skills to resolve the issues later
- System to help improve feeding
efficiency

Overfeeding
- Waste feed – high FCR
- Toxicity – Ammonia, Nitrite,
Hydrogen-Sulfide
- Unstable water quality – pH swing,
plankton bloom/crash
- Affect shrimp health/survival
- Increase cost of feed, probiotic (or
other water treatment material)

Underfeeding
- Low ADG – longer cycle
- Shrimps go to sludge area for food
- Affect shrimp health/survival
Majority (90%) of shrimp production cost - Increase cost of energy,
maintenance, labor
can be reduced with effective feeding

SONIC Research:
“understanding your shrimp”

Some examples:
➢ Learning how and when your shrimp are
eating during the day:

Example of hourly feed intake average over 1 month in 1 pond showing 2

periods of less feeding activity during the day.
➢ Receive Early Warnings…

- Molting:

Significant decrease in feed

intake with an almost
asynchronous temporal moult
occurring on 3 ponds of similar
sized shrimp on the same farm
- Disease

•Example of a significant decrease in feed intake over several days

due to microsporidian sp. infestation.
•Some diseases may be more acute and mortality may occur rapidly
over a single day
➢ Understand Pond Water Parameters/Quality
impacts…

Example of temperature drop

impacts on daily feeding
Example of feeding pattern differences at variable
temperature and DO level…

Temp (PM) = 28.2 C DO (PM) = 4.4 mg/L

Temp (PM) = 24.3 C DO (PM) = 3.3 mg/L

➢ Pellet size affect on intake
•5 gm shrimp fed on 2.2mm pellets up to 2/7 then switched to
smaller 1.2mm pellets on 3/7, note the significant increase in
intake when pellets are the desirable size for the shrimp.
➢ Feed Quality (Pellet hardness, composition,…)

➢ New shrimp feed quality criteria?
feed consumption rate

Type "A" 243.0 504.2

Type "B" 475.6 1984.2

• Feed “B” eaten 95,7% faster than Feed “A”

• Recorded feeding activity level 4 times higher for
Feed “B” than for Feed “A”
