Introduction

A Beach Resort is where people can spend their special occasion or holiday on a place near the beach
or seaside. It is a lodging facility wherein different types of services including serving of food & beverages, and
amenities are being offered. This includes recreational activities, sports, entertainments, and even holistic
approach services which are dedicated for the vacationers and guests for them to enjoy, (Landman, 2021). In
addition, Beach Resorts are often far from the city since it is near seaside and is either located in public or private
beach.

The Beach Resort’s main function is to provide a lodging for vacationers while offering different types of
amenities and activities to accommodate them. Beach resorts often includes outdoor or indoor pools, which is an
alternative choice for vacationers aside from the public or private beach.

CASE STUDIES

1.1 SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort / onion - Ko Samui District, Thailand

I. Project Definition and Function

SALA Samui Chaweng is a Beach Resort which span across 10751 m2 of land, facing the seaside which
is located in Chaweng Beach on Thailand’s third largest island. The beach resort’s overall design is to enhance a
sequence of light, shade, and shadow.
The beach resort is also known for its palm-fringed seaside, mountains, trails and rainforest, coconut
groves, crystal clear seawater, and especially its holistic approach services such as massage therapy and spa. In
addition, the beach resort is a three-storey building with a private swimming pool on every guest rooms. Another
feature of the beach resort is each room has a private swimming pool with a stunning view of the beach. In addition,
the resort has 4 pool-villas which can accommodate a lot of visitors, even at peak hours. The 3-storey building is
where all the guest rooms are located, and each floor has different layout of rooms from one another. Garden Pool
Suites are located on the first level, with the swimming pool at the rear. Balcony Pool Suites on the second and
third levels include private swimming pool rooms on balconies overlooking the central seaside courtyard (González,
2018).

SALA Samui Chaweng Restaurant

The architect of the beach resort aims to provide an open area design to maximize the breeze coming
from the beach and to provide an open circulation for visitors which means there is no attempt to control pathway
for visitors or circulation. As for the pool area, guests may sit, walk, and lie down anywhere along the perimeter
where the water level is appropriate for their posture. The flooring of the swimming pool progressively tilts toward
the niche wall. For reasons of seclusion, each niche fits the human scale. And at night, the lighting design evokes
the atmosphere of a full moon in the ocean. And lastly, the design of circular swimming pools' daybeds and
umbrellas are undirected which means there is no specific location for entering the swimming pool area.

Another special characteristic of the resort is that nothing blocks the scenery of the ocean from the guests’
perspective. The beach is the main landscape, even from the greatest outdoor courtyard to the smallest inner area
of every room. Even from the lobby, one can view the sea. Moreover, the design aims to make Sala Samui
Chaweng Beach Resort to maximize a cycle of light, shade, and shadow, (González, 2018).

II. Design Considerations

The SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort is located in the coast of Ko Samui District in Thailand, an
island in Bangkok that is abundant in natural resources and clear sea. In order to maximize the area. The
architect/designer applied design considerations to the design to provide the perfect beach resort for the visitors.
These are:

• Existing Trees and Vegetation – Since the island is abundant in trees and different kind of plantations,
the architect/designer preserved and used the existing trees to create a pleasing ambience for the visitors.

• Privacy – Each room are designed to accommodate the guests through its cozy ambience and furniture
while maintaining the privacy of the users. Services and amenities are also available for every room.

• Sustainability – The materials used in constructing SALA Samui Chaweng are sustainable materials
meant to lessen the carbon footprint and provide visual pleasantry. The materials such as bamboo, rattan
and even coconut shells are incorporated in the interior and furniture designs.

III. Materials Specifications

The designer aims to bring a minimalistic approach through the use of sustainable materials, furniture,
and selective colors. The beach resort practices the use of green materials and bring the best value of it to provide
comfort and visual pleasantry to users. These materials are:

• Bamboo blinders which can be seen in lobby’s ceilings.

• Coconut Shells used in lamps and furniture such as table legs

Group has established sustainability criteria for each of the group's premium resorts and distinct shops in Bangkok,
Chiang Mai, Khao Yai, Ayutthaya, Koh Samui, and Phuket, with the goal of decreasing environmental effect and
carbon footprint.

Another factor in selecting sites is its economic status. In selecting sites, economic plays an important
role, especially in constructing income generating building such as beach resorts. In addition to that, the availability
of the site to the users should be considered as well. The site should be easy to access for local and international
tourist through careful planning.

VII. Considerations for Resort Development

Various factors must be addressed during the process and planning when designing a resort as it is a
vital aspect for tourist places such as beach resorts that provides accommodation and entertainment for its users.
The overall design and planning of every structure depends on site and environmental conditions including the
building materials and its neighboring structure. These several factors are:

• Environmental Considerations

In planning and designing beach resorts, the environment should be the utmost priority. It must
consider elements such as the amount of pollution caused by the construction, the harm to fertile soils,
and the disposal of trash, solid waste, and sewage. The goal of the design should be to preserve as much
of the natural environment as possible and to develop with it in mind.

• Hierarchy of Spaces

The resort's layout has a significant impact on the design's overall functionality and success. The
plan should be based on a space hierarchy that distinguishes between public, semi-public, and private
places. The areas should be accessible to persons of all ages, and particular facilities for those with
disabilities should be provided. And lastly, it is crucial to have a good link between the interior and outdoor
areas, as well as a smooth transition from one to the other.

• Accessibility

In order to be easily accessible, the layout must include many entry and departure points,
considering the site's road network. Moreover, the resort must be well connected to the surrounding
environment. Lastly, there should be more than one access point to the site for emergency purposes.

VIII. Post-pandemic Approach

The transition to the new normal imposed a big change in our daily lives. It affected our way of living and
everyone are required to follow health protocols in order to limit the spread of the pandemic. However, these health
protocols serve as a step for us to enjoy and spend our lives without worrying. The beach resort implements health
protocols such as:
• Verification of swab test for costumers

Visitors are required to present their swab-test, for both local and foreign visitors to ensure
the health and safety of all customers within the resort development.

• Only vaccinated customers are allowed to enter.

The beach resort will only allow vaccinated individuals to enter the facilities for the assurance
and protection of the community.

• Monitoring of body temperature for customers that come and depart from the beach
resort.
Regular monitoring of body temperature and contact tracing will be conducted for customers
who will enter from the beach resort.

• Limited number of visitors

The resort development will apply only 50% of accommodation capacity given by the
Department of Tourism under the HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES GOVERNING THE
OPERATIONS OF ACCOMMODATION ESTABLISHMENTS UNDER THE NEW NORMAL (Department
of Tourism, 2020).
