MELC 3: Distinguish mixtures from substances based on a set of properties

Lesson/Topic: Substances
Reference/Source: Science 7 Learner’s Material Page No.17-26

Objective/Subtask: Identify substances based on their properties.

Activity No.: 1 Title: identifying substances
Day: 1&2
SUBSTANCES AND THEIR PROPERTIES
A substance is matter which has a specific composition and specific properties. Every pure element is
a substance. Every pure compound is a substance. Pure substances are further classified as elements
and compounds. An element is a substance that consists of only one type or kind of atom. An element is a
pure substance as it cannot be broken down or transformed into a new substance even by using some
physical or chemical means. Elements are mostly metals, non-metals, or metalloids. Compounds, on the
other hand, are also pure substances when two or more elements are combined chemically in a fixed
ratio. However, these substances can be broken down into separate elements by chemical methods.

Examples of substances: Iron is an element and hence is also a substance. Methane is a compound and
hence is also a substance.

Examples of non-substances: Salt water is not a substance. It is a mixture of two substances - sodium
chloride and water. Its composition and therefore its properties are not fixed. Gasoline is not a substance.
It is a mixture of hydrocarbons and, depending on the composition of the gasoline mixture, gasoline's
properties can vary.

Properties of Pure Substances

• Has a fixed composition
• Cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical changes
• Only changed Chemically
• Properties do not change.
• Water is a pure substance

Directions: Identify if the following based on the given property. Write substance if it manifest a property of
a substance, Not a substance if it does not.
_S_________________1. Chloride, an element has is fixed composition.
__S_________________2. A brine can be separated physically through a process called distillatilation.
___NAS________________3. Halo-halo is made up of more than 2 component.
____S________________4. Carbon dioxide, is made up of carbon and oxygen bonded chemically.
___S_________________5. an element, after bonding don’t change its properties.
______S______________6. Bleach is made up of 2 or more components that can be separated physically.
_______S_____________7. Gold has a fixed composition.

Filtration
This method is used to separate small,
insoluble solid particles dispersed or suspended in
a liquid medium and the suspended particles are
passed through a filter or sieve.

Evaporation
To separate dissolved solids from a liquid
solution, you can simply heat the solution until all
the water or liquid evaporates, leaving the solid
behind. This process is called evaporation to
dryness.

Distillation
This method involves heating the solution
until it oils and then condensin g the vapor back to
liquid form in a separate container. Pure water can
be distilled from a salt solution using distillation.
The extracted liquid from distillation process is
called a distillate.

Chromatography
It i s a board range of physical methods
used to separate and identify the components of
a mixture.
