MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PERSONAL STATEMENT

Over the past year, the final year of my undergraduate degree at Warwick University, as the
complexity of the maths and physics I have studied has increased, I have grown an
increasing interest in specifically, the mechanical side of physics. Also, my love for abstract
mathematics has slowly dwindled as I’ve found there to be little application of these topics
to the real world. The physics-based modules such as fluid dynamics and quantum physics
have been a real inspiration in my decision to apply for a master’s in mechanical engineering
as I feel I could develop on ideas from these modules in the coming year. The logical way of
thinking required to be a good engineer, combined with an aptitude for performing precise
calculations, are both traits which I believe I possess. I also find deep satisfaction in solving
all sorts of logical problems, something which I believe this course will continue to develop.

Additionally, having examined the core modules of this course, I see that there is a heavy
emphasis on using technology to solve mechanical problems, skills which I am keen on
developing as I have very much enjoyed the computing modules of my degree during my
previous three years at Warwick. I have also, during my own time, become much more
adept in my coding abilities, specifically using Python. Moreover, I believe these skills would
hold large value in any career path I choose to take after my time at university, as if I don’t
choose to go with my current plan of working as an engineer, I most certainly will choose a
career path which requires similar skills. Moreover, the idea of individually researching a
topic of my choice, most likely related to aerodynamics or fluid dynamics in my case, is
something of great inspiration to me.

A few years ago, I spent a week at Gatwick airport for work experience. For the majority of
the week, I spent time with the engineering team as they explained to me the ways in which
they operated the light system of the entire airport. They even took me to adjust the lights
on the runway on a particularly foggy day. The environment I found myself in, was one
which I envision to be working in after my studies and I feel that this sort of experience will
only help me with this course, particularly in the group project aspect.

I believe that success, as an engineer in this day and age, requires technical competence and
a combination of management, leadership, communication and business skills. I believe I
have proven that I am technically competent in my performances at school and more
recently in my final year at university. Also, I believe my leadership and communication
skills, something which my lifelong devotion to sport has developed to a high level, will only
be improved by my undertaking of this degree.

Away from my studies, I am a very keen sports fan and player. I have been a member of the
Warwick Rugby Union 1st XV for the duration of my undergraduate degree and am a keen
footballer and golfer, with the aerodynamic effect of different patterns on a golf ball being
of particular interest to me and possibly something I hope to research in more depth. I am
also a maths and physics tutor for school children of any age, from primary school to A level.

Lastly, I have really enjoyed my first three years at Warwick and have very much enjoyed my
maths and physics degree having achieved a mark of 72 in my final year of study, with my
relatively poor performance in second year as a result of a few personal, situational issues,
leading to a 2:1 overall. I believe I am capable of completing this postgraduate course to a
high standard and I hope to continue my university journey as an engineering postgraduate.
