CLASS: Grade 11
TOPIC: Summary Writing
TIME: 45 Minutes

DEFINITION OF TERM
Summary writing is concise writing. The passage is written in prose and
the answers should as much as possible, avoid the words of the
original passage.
Summary is the types of reduction of written or spoken material.
Summary writing involves answering questions from a given passage.
The answers involve a reduction of main points of paragraphs.

STEPS IN SUMMARY WRITING


1. Check the instructions given
2. Read the passage quickly to grasp the general sense.
3. Read the questions
4. Read through the passage again, this time slowly for a clear
understanding of details and reasons. As you read now,
underline the areas from where the answers to the questions you
have read should come from.
5. Then answer the questions.
HOW TO ANSWER SUMMARY QUESTIONS

1. First make a rough draft of the answers.


2. Correct the draft.
3. Copy the corrected draft into your answer sheets.
4. Cancel out the draft neatly and write the final draft.
5. Be fast!
FEATURES OF SUMMARY WRITING
1. First understand the original passage and first form an overall view
of its main aim.
2. As much as possible, paraphrase your sentences. On no
condition should you copy large sections of the passage.
3. Ensure that your explanation does not change or distort the
original meaning of the passage.
4. Unless your opinion is called for, do not give it.
5. Answers to summary questions should be as short as possible and
as clear as possible. Avoid irrelevant points.
6. Do exactly what you are asked to; do not write more than the
required sentences. For example, give three reasons, in two
sentences etc.
7. Ensure you have your answers written in sentences and not
phrases.
8. Do not answer your summary questions in paragraphs. Each
answer must be properly numbered and appear on a separate
line as a complete sentence.
9. Ensure your answers are written in short and simple sentences.
10. Learn to omit the following in your answers; examples,
repetitions, analogies, illustrations, statistics etc.

CONNECTIVES USED IN SUMMARY WRITING


Because of, due to, on account of, owing to, first, second, third, in
addition, next, besides, on the contrary, moreover, nevertheless,
alternatively, finally, as a result of, meanwhile, however, meanwhile
etc.
THINGS TO AVOID IN SUMMARY WRITING
1. Mark is deducted for each grammatical error in each correct
answer.
2. Mark is deducted for inclusion of irrelevant materials in each
scoring answer.
3. Avoid extraneous materials; materials not from the passage.
4. Avoid writing your answers in phrases, write in sentences.
5. Avoid making two points in a sentence, one will be regarded as
irrelevant.
6. Do not write more than the required sentences.
7. Plagiarism and copying from the passage attracts no mark.

DEFINITION OF TERM

Registers are words, phrases, terms or expressions that are frequently


used in discussing a particular area of human endeavour, field,
occupation or profession. These expressions are sometimes called
“professional jargons” because it is known and mostly used by people
in the same profession.

Some fields of human activity listed in WAEC syllabus include,


Photography, Advertising, Insurance, Journalism, Military,
Government and Politics, Air transport, Sea transport, Rail transport,
Road transport, Building, Book Publishing, Sports, Entertainment,
Agriculture, Banking, Education, Library, Religion, Fishing, Power
production etc.

SEA TRANSPORT: Ocean-liner, berth, boat-yard, cabin, dock or wharf,


mast, harbour, liner, anchor, anchorage, ensign, stern, port, star-
board, rudder, port-hole, gangway, cargo, captain, helmsman,
seasick, shipwreck, ply, watch, speedboat, onshore, offshore, luxury
liner, crane, trawler, tidal, dredge, canal, blow off course, crewmen,
