EXAMPLE 1 Brianna purchased a small laptop computer for $550.00. She signed up for an interest-
free payment plan where she will pay $50 per month until the computer is paid off.
Write a function to determine how long it will take Brianna to pay off the computer.
Use A to represent the amount of money and t to represent the time in months.
Because the original loan amount is $550 and the amount Brianna owes for the
laptop decreases by $50 each month, the situation can be modeled by the
equation A(t) = 550 - 50t.
A graph of the function can help you to analyze Brianna’s situation.
From the graph, you can see that the original loan amount A(t)
of $550 is represented by the y-intercept, ( 0, 550). 600
Next, find how long it takes Brianna to pay off at least half of the loan.
Half of the loan amount of $550 is $275. The points on the graph closest to $275
are ( 5, 300) and (6, 250). At (5, 300), Brianna still has more than half of the loan
left to pay. It takes her 6 months to pay off at least half of the loan.
To use the equation to find how long, substitute 275 for A(t) and solve for t.
Because Brianna only makes payments once per month, it will take her 6 months
to pay off at least half the loan.
The distance from the final destination is miles. After each hour, Jamil’s

9. A local fitness center offers a membership with an application fee of $14.95 and a
membership fee of $9.95 per month. A new center offers an application fee that is
$5.50 less than its competitor, but a membership fee that is $1.00 more per month.
Which function models the cost of a membership at the new center?
