The goals of COPD assessment are to determine the level of airflow limitation, its impact on
the patient’s health status and the risk of future events (such as exacerbations, hospital
admissions or death), in order to, eventually, guide therapy. To achieve these goals, COPD
assessment must consider the following aspects of the disease separately:
► Presence of comorbidities
guiding therapies in COPD. The separation of airflow limitation from clinical parameters
makes it clearer what is being evaluated and ranked. This facilitates more precise treatment
recommendations based on parameters that are driving the patient’s symptoms at any
given time.
