About This Holiday


- National holiday.

November.
- It’s a long weekend (4 days).
- It is a day families get together
for a special meal.
- It is also a day people give
thanks for what they have.

- On September 1620, around 100
British puritans set sail on a ship
(Mayflower), escaping from the
religious persecution.
- After 2 months, they arrived in
Plymouth (Massachusetts, USA)
and established a colony.
- Half of them died (cold / winter
/ infectious and contagious
diseases).

History
- Friendly Indians who lived close to them helped them and also taught them to
plant and hunt.
- In the fall of 1621, they harvested their first crop.
- To celebrate and also show gratitude to the Indians, they decided to throw a
party and 90 Indians were with them.
- Lots of food were served on this day: seafood, deer meat, vegetables (especially
corn), fruits and nuts.
- This celebration lasted 3 days.

- In 1863, the president Abraham
Lincoln declared the fourth
Thursday of November a national
holiday to celebrate
Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving Dinner
Turkey (usually stuffed and roasted, but sometimes deep-fried), mashed
potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet corn, fall
vegetables (mainly squashes, green beans and Brussel sprouts) and for
dessert, pumpkin pie.

Why “Turkey Day”?


- It is believed, turkey was
hunted and consumed on the
very first Thanksgiving.
- Nowadays: it is the featured
item on most Thanksgiving feast
tables (89% of the country).
- More than 60 million turkeys
were consumed last year (more
than $1.5 billion on turkeys for
Thanksgiving).

Day.
- It’s the first day of America’s
Christmas shopping season.
- The busiest shopping day of the
year.
- Heavy and disruptive pedestrian
and vehicle traffic on the day
after Thanksgiving.

Why is it called “ Black Friday”?


- After an entire year of operating at a loss (“in the red”) stores would supposedly
earn a profit (“went into the black”) on the day after Thanksgiving, because
holiday shoppers blew so much money on discounted merchandise. - Though it’s
true that retail companies used to record losses in red and profits in black when
doing their accounting, this version of Black Friday’s origin is the official, but
inaccurate—story behind the tradition.
