Hi, Carly!
Help! I’m going to France to visit a company that we work with, and the manager and his wife
have invited me to spend the weekend at their country house. My French isn’t great, but I’m
not so worried about that. The problem is, I have no idea what I’m expected to do. You lived
in France for a long time. Can you give me some tips? Am I supposed to wear a suit and tie,
or are jeans and a T-shirt OK? Should I take a gift? Is it OK to talk business? Please give me
any advice you can. I want to make a good impression!
Thanks!
Bob

Hi, Bob!
I’m so jealous that you’re going to France. I really miss that place. . . .
How nice of them to invite you for the weekend. Don’t worry. Weekends like this are usually
pretty relaxed. I’m not sure about jeans and a T-shirt, though. A nice pair of pants and a shirt
would be safer – but no suit and tie! A gift for your host’s wife is a good idea – maybe a
souvenir from home or some chocolates. Should you discuss business? I’d say it depends on
your host. He may want to talk about work when you aren’t with his family, but let him be the
one who starts the conversation. It’s better to stick to social and cultural topics.
Good luck and enjoy the trip!
