What makes a good music video?

In my opinion there are many different aspects of a good music video, for example: *Storyline *How the audience can associate with it *Link to the song *Creativity *Originality I think this because all of the best music videos I can think of, include these things, however I decided to research the most watched music videos on youtube to see what draws people in! Fifth most viewed: Jennifer Lopez- On The Floor ft. Pitbull This video has 271,716,296 views and is based around a nightclub scene; it features many Gaga-esc outfits. The shots are high pace- and many use the fading technique. There are also some product placement shots in this, for example in the start she advertises Swarovski something common in music videos- one of the most famous being Lady Gaga wearing coke cans in her hair to promote them and reportedly earning millions in the process. This video also features Jennifer Lopez performing highly choreographed dance routes and many scantily clad girls to obviously keep to the theme and vibe of the video. It is most popular with females aged 13-17 and 1824 along with males 35-44. http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=t4H_Zoh7G5A

Fourth most viewed: Eminem- Love The Way You Lie ft. Rhianna Currently holding 354,027,533 views, it is both Eminems and Rhiannas most successful video. It features Megan Fox, most famous for her role in Transformers, and Dominic Monaghan, famous for staring in Lost, fans of them likely to watch the video too and add to the view count. The video is said to be based on the rocky relationship between Eminems and his ex wife Kim, a fact that probably draws the audience in. It demonstrates domestic violence, something that Rhianna was very publically a victim of, which again would likely draw viewers. As well as this, because it is a corroboration between two artists that are so popular- and considered coolmany views would come from both fan parties. The shots are fast pace, during the fighting scenes- these are used to contrast with the slow, soft shots used when the couple are in love. The light is also very important throughout the video, with many bright lights to represent the flames which accompany the lyrics Just gonna stand there and watch me burn also, when the couple make up after a fight, the sunlight increases showing a new day/start, which inevitably leads to another fall out. There are many close ups of Rihanna, but not many of Eminem- I think this shows how in most relationships you only get one point of view, and people dont often try to see others- in this case they focus on the womans POV in the video whilst telling the males POV in the song. It has been mostly viewed by males with 18-24 and 25-34 year olds watching it most, along with females 13-17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uelHwf8o7_U

The light that was made to look like flames ^^

Third most viewed: Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) (The Official 2010 FIFA World cup Song)Shakira. Currently holding 362,404,038 views, this becomes the third most viewed of all time. It features clips of different from previous world cups including fans as well as key goals etc. The shots are quite fast pace and go with the rhyme of the song. It also features Shakira dancing and celebrating the world cup with world cup fans and previous players. As well as this, they use traditional African drums- linking with the African world cup. This song was obvious very popular over the world cup and with football fans, and due to the huge publicity the world cup receives; the view count is most likely a bi-product of it. It is most popular with males aged 35-44 & 44-54 as well as females 13-17, an age group who obviously watch a lot of music videos.

Traditional African environment.

Second most viewed: Bad Romance- Lady Gaga With 394,184,589 views it is Lady Gagas highest viewed video to date. Its based around the idea she is a prostitute, and includes her dancing with others to gain $1 million dollars, and when she reaches that goal- she must sleep with the bidder. However she goes on to kill him, proving shes not the average prostitute. The video features many things designed to shock, which in turn would give her more publicity and in the end result in more record sales. For example, she is pictured almost naked as well as being dressed in a tight leather suit which covers her face while she dances. The thing I most noticed while watching the video this time round was the amount of product placement she includes, e.g. alcohol brands, dr dre laptops, headphones, sunglasses brands and many more, obviously increasing her budget to create this piece. The shots are normally mid-shot, to incorporate her carefully choreographed dance routines and to keep the audience up to date on the story. However there are some close ups of Lady Gaga- but only her, showing how she is the most important person in the video as well as her emotion at the time. The shots are mostly fast- but start off slow and progress into it, as the pace of the song increases. Most views from this video came from males with the ages 35-44 and 4554 watching along with females 13-17.

Promoting Dr. Dre Beats ^^.

The most viewed music video of all time: Justin Bieber- Baby ft Ludacris. The most viewed video has had staggering 578,185,568 views since its upload on Feb 19th 2010. It features Bieber performing dance routines around a bowling alley in an attempt to impress a girl. He tries to persuade the girl to become his girlfriend though out the video, by following her and not taking no for an answer, which in the end she did- as the actress who played Biebers girlfriend in the video, began dating him afterwards. In the middle of the video, the girls friends and his friends have a dance off which results in finally the two getting together in the end. Justin gets a lot of solo close up shots, which gives the impression they are trying to sell the Bieber brand to girls. There are also many mid-length shots which help to provide the scene for the video, and capture the dance routines performed. The shots fade in and out of each other, skipping between scenes as the story moves on. As well as this the lighting is kept pretty much the same throughout, bluey/purple to create a sense of continuity and flow to the video. As well as this they use some flashes of different lights- which gives it a more professional feel. The shots are mid-pace up to fastwhich gives the impression of chasing, and desperation- something Bieber is resorting to in order to get the girl. The video is most common with Males 13-17 and 35-44 as well as females 13-17, this surprised me as I expected it to be a lot more female orientated.
