TEXTS FROM
VARIOUS
DISCIPLINES
OBJECTIVES
• Identify language used in the
essay/article/selection;
• Distinguish the general, specific and operational
meaning of the language used in academic
texts; and,
• Differentiate the language used in different
disciplines such as Business, Law, Art, Philosophy,
Politics, Religion, Science, Sports and TechVoc
CONCEPTS
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE
- represents the language demands of school
(academics)
- language used in textbooks, in classrooms, on tests,
and in each discipline
- different in vocabulary and structure from the
everyday spoken English of social interactions
- each type of communication (both academic
and social) has its purpose, and neither is superior
to the other.
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE
- Examples of social language vs. academic
language:
 Social language may look like this: ''Hey, how are
you doing? Do you want to come over later to
hang out?‘’
 Academic language may look like this: ''Draw
conclusions about the author's purpose based on
his use of metaphor and rhyme structure.''
ACADEMIC VOCABULARY
- used in all academic disciplines to teach about
the content of the discipline
- does not include words students use in general
conversation but relates to other familiar words
that students do use
-Ex. watch – observe
prove – validate
boost / strengthen - reinforce
ACADEMIC VOCABULARY

- Ex. Periodic table – tablespoon of sugar

Bill of Rights – Electricity Bill
Capital Letters – Manila : Capital City of
Philippines
ACADEMIC STRUCTURE
- includes the established ways of organizing writing
(which can affect how one reads) in a discipline
- different genres, paragraph/sentence structure,
level of text difficulty, purpose, intended audience,
overall organization, and knowledge of outside
resources for the text all affect how one writes and
reads in that discipline.
GUIDE IN DETERMINING
THE LANGUAGE USED IN
ACADEMIC TEXT FROM
VARIOUS DISCIPLINES
•Identify the text and then analyze the
genre, academic structure and
academic vocabulary.
For example, a lab report for chemistry
requires different academic structure and
vocabulary than a newspaper article for
social studies or a food recipe for home
economics.
• Identify and analyze the explicit
instruction/deconstruction concerning the
text; consider multiple models if necessary.
Example: Deconstruct a word problem in
algebra that requires different academic
language from deconstructing a proof in
geometry, a poem in English, or a musical
symphony. Use textual evidence to support
their ideas in speaking and writing.
•Use explicit, scaffolded instruction:
a clear instructions, both auditory
and visual, and make models of
expected or possible outcomes.
• Bring academic language to
the surface: identify its
usage to a particular
discipline.

In extreme cases, people suffering from CTE have
even committed suicide or homicide. The majority of
people who develop these issues are athletes who
participate in popular high-impact sports, especially
football. Although both new sports regulations and
improvements in helmet technology can help
protect players, the sports media and fans alike
bear some of the responsibility for reducing the
incidence of these shocking injuries.
Players who have suffered a head injury on the field
must undergo a "concussion sideline assessment"—a
series of mental and physical fitness tests—before
being allowed back in the game. In an effort to
diminish the amount of head and neck injuries on the
field, NFL officials have begun enforcing stricter
penalty calls for helmet-to-helmet contact, leading
with the head, and hitting a defenseless player.
Furthermore, as of 2010, if a player’s helmet is
accidentally wrenched from his head during
play, the ball is immediately whistled dead.
There is hope that these new regulations,
coupled with advances in helmet design, will
reduce the number of concussions player
endure, and thus curb the number of CTE
cases.

The purpose of this research study is to examine the influence of Social Media
and Academic Performance Of students in University of Lagos. Five Research
questions and five Research hypotheses guided the study. To achieve this, the
descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study focused on
University of Lagos hence, population consists of all the 24,661 full-time
undergraduate students. The simple random sampling technique was used to
select a sample of 378 students. A four point Likert Type Rating Scale
Questionnaire type, titled: Social Media and Academic Performance of
Students Questionnaire (SMAAPOS) was used to collect data from the
participants. The descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentage,
were used to analyze the demographic data while inferential statistics of Chi-
square(x2) was used in testing the research hypotheses. Research findings
showed that a great number of students in University of Lagos, are addicted to
social media. To this end, the researcher recommended that social media
should be used for educational purposes as well; Social Networking Sites should
be expanded and new pages should be created to enhance academic
activities and avoid setbacks in the students’ academic performance; and
Students should be monitored by teachers and parents on how they use these
sites This is to create a balance between social media and academic activities
of students to avoid setbacks in the academic performance of the students.
Businesses today routinely keep track of large amounts of both financial
and non- financial information. Sales departments keep track of current
and potential customers; marketing departments keep track of product
details and regional demographics; accounting departments keep track of
financial data and issue reports. To be useful, all this data must be
organized into a meaningful and useful system. Such a system is called a
management information system, abbreviated MIS. The financial hub of the
MIS is accounting. Accounting is the information system that records,
analyzes, and reports economic transactions, enabling decision makers to
make informed choices when allocating scarce economic resources. It is a
tool that enables the user, whether a business entity or an individual, to
make wiser, more informed economic choices. It is an aid to planning,
controlling, and evaluating a broad range of activities. A financial
accounting system is intended for use by both the management of an
organization and those outside the organization.
