Aim is to produce a young peoples guide to waste. Aim of the activity is for pupils to produce short tackling waste hierarchy infomercial using their media of choice. Pupils will have a greater understanding Wales waste minimisation targets. Pupils will have an understanding of the need for an increase in the amount of waste diverted from landfill. Pupils will have a greater understanding of the different strategies required to manage different waste streams. Pupils will gain an understanding that a viable alternative to landfill is required. Pupils will understand the need to consider all levels of the waste hierarchy. Pupils to watch the Environment Ministers interview with www.letsrecycle.com where she outlines the Waste Targets for Wales.(Link1) Pupils to research current %ages of different types of waste & treatment, the amount currently landfilled and current remaining landfill capacity (Link 2) and share findings with the other pupils. Conduct a short discussion on the implications of these targets to the people of Wales in light of current levels & their own practices currently. Pupils to consider the waste hierarchy and the challenges it presents (Link 3) do they have ideas as to how WAG targets can be achieved? What kind of commitment will it require both from the public and from Govt? Pupils to consider the 70% Recycling Target. 100% - 70% = 30%, this coupled with falling landfill capacity requires alternative solution for remaining 30%. Do the pupils have any solutions/ suggestions? Do they currently undertake activities to try and lessen the impact they have? How would they persuade their peers to start talking about rubbish?
