comes to believe that he is worthless and worries that working-class people are wicked by nature. On New Year's Eve, some goblins show him visions of what will become of his loved ones if they are allowed to continue believing that they are worthless and wicked. Toby Veck, called Trotty due to the strange way he walks, is a hard-working, honest but poor man, who has a deep obsession with the bells in the church tower, the porch of which is where he waits for work as a ticket porter. The strange thing about Trotty is that when the bells chime, it’s as if he hears them ringing out messages. He lives with his daughter, Margaret .we can neither call it ordinary nor unusual the book had many twists which were interesting and mind blowing. There was nothing much at the very beginning of the story but it was iimportant as the story gave us a detailed information about the characters .The main character of The Chimes is Toby Veck, known to everyone as Trotty Veck, a man who is more than sixty years old, has worked hard all his life but is still very poor. Trotty Veck earns a meagre living as a porter and messenger, getting his nickname as a result of constantly "trotting" about from place to place. Some other main characters were -
Toby "Trotty" Veck, the protagonist, a poor elderly
messenger or "ticket-porter." Margaret "Meg" Veck, Toby's 21-year-old daughter Mrs. Anne Chickenstalker, the local shopkeeper Alderman Cute, a Justice of the Peace Mr. Filer, a political economist in the Utilitarian mould Sir Joseph Bowley, a rich paternalist MP Will Fern, a countryman Lilian Fern, Will's orphaned niece
Toby veck has a daughter whose name is Margaret . lilian fern
is will ferns niece. The characters were very well described about their family ,work , what all do they like or what all do they hate etc..I found toby veck very sympathetic as not only because he was the main character but his character was very interesting. in this book the characters did not change . this book was reffered to in as third person .yes the settings were described in detail. Yes the feeling and the attitudes were describes in detail.
My favourite part of the book was when on New Year’s Eve,
Toby hears the tolling of the bells, and thinking they are calling to him, he goes to the church, where he finds the door to the bell tower unlocked and open. Climbing the stairs, when he reaches the bells, he is greeted with the vision of a multitude of goblins dancing. There was no such moments or characters that I would have improved but I would have added more characters in the story Yes I do feel that the writer had a particular reason to write the story. As some of the lines in the story depict real history Trotty's conviction that poor people are naturally wicked is influenced by an article in his newspaper about a young woman who has tried to hurt herself, and this motif returns at the climax of the book. I feel very good after reading this book this book it goes throughout the struggle that is faced by a poor person .i surely think that I have learnt many many interesting as well as important things after reading this book it has taught me ways to live my life happily .this book has bought a smile on the face of many readers as Charles dickens books are very interesting. I would recommend to read this book and also other book of the author.
