ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATION

A. AIR POLLUTION ABATEMENT

The process involved in the production of collagen hydrolysate from tuna skin does not emit
hazardous levels of air pollutants. Therefore, there is no need for employment of any air
pollution abatement programs.

Glycerol

The emission of glycerol in our waste stream exceeds that of the allowable limits set by
the DENR where the threshold value is 0.01ppm and the value that we are emitting is 5250 ppm
therefore the abatement program that we are going to use is either adsorption using a strong
base or concentration lowering via dilution.

Organics

The production of organics such as NCP, saponified fats, pepsin and collagen hydrolysate
in our waste stream is found to have exceeded the threshold value set by the DENR which is
0.05ppm while our emission is 1.5x105 ppm. The abatement program that we will be using to
control the emission of organics are either coagulation, absorption, chemical oxidation or
membrane techniques.

NaOH

The emission of NaOH in our waste stream was found to have a concentration 36000
ppm which exceeds that of the threshold value set by the DENR which is 180 ppm. The
abatement program that we are going to apply to control the emission of NaOH are either two-
stage diffusion dialysis or electro-dialysis.

HCl

The HCl in our waste stream is found to have a concentration of 3.28x10 5 ppm which
exceeds that of the threshold limit set by the DENR which is 4.92 – 282 ppm. The abatement
program that we will be applying to control the emission of HCl in the exit stream is acid
neutralization.

HAc

The emission concentration of HAc in our waste stream is 7.04x10 5 ppm and the
threshold value set by the DENR is 10-15 ppm. The abatement program that we are going to
apply to control the emission of HAc is the carbon adsorption.

NaCl

The NaCl emission in our waste stream is found to have a concentration of 8.1x10 4 ppm
which exceeds the threshold limit set by the DENR which is 500 ppm to remedy this problem the
abatement program that we will do to control the emission of NaCl in our waste stream are
either sand bioreactor, nano-filter or reverse osmosis.
