Diptera on Grassholm Island, Pembrokeshire.

G r a s s h o l m i s a s m a l l r o c k y i s l e t , a b o u t t w e n t y acres i n ex-
t e n t , s i t u a t e d a b o u t e i g h t m i l e s off t h e P e m b r o k e s h i r e c o a s t .
A b o u t o n e - t h i r d of the island is o c c u p i e d by a l a r g e c o l o n y ot
g a n n e t s , a n d t h e rest i s m o s t l y c o v e r e d w i t h r o u g h r a n k g r a s s ,
w i t h very few flowers (no t h r i f t , b r a c k e n o r gorse). Prof. J u l i a n
H u x l e y and M r . R . M . L o c k l e y o f S k o k h o l m visited the island
i n J u n e , 1934, f o r t h e p u r p o s e o f s t u d y i n g t h e b i r d s , a n d w h i l e
there collected some insects w h i c h he s u b m i t t e d to the B r i t i s h
M u s e u m for d e t e r m i n a t i o n . On 27th A u g u s t , 1934, I paid a
b r i e f v i s i t t o the island i n c o m p a n y w i t h M r . and M r s . L o c k l e y ,
and was able to spend half an h o u r in s w e e p i n g lor insects.
I also e x a m i n e d the g a n n e t s ' nests, b u t f o u n d p r a c t i c a l l y n o t h i n g
m them.
