4. ENGINE CONTROL MODULE

4.1. Overview ● Recommended ECM Ground paths and allowed/

forbidden power supply connection set-ups.
The main features of the Engine Control Module are:
● Hardware: BOSCH EDC7C1
– The following ECM power supply/GND connection
● Communication Interface: one High-Speed CAN set-up is recommended (see Figure 4.1):
● Communication Protocols: SAE J1939 for engine
control, K-Line for engine diagnosis
● Emission level software management: Euro 3

– The following ECM power supply/GND connection
set-ups are NOT allowed (see Figure 4.2):
● Supply current in stand-by mode (K15 off)

without engine running
NOTE:
this figure shows a set-up having the internal supply
GND connection to ECM housing. In this case, if the
engine ground connection is faulty, an undesired
current can flow through the housing into the ECM PCB.

4.1.2. Storage Temperature

Storage duration at Tamb = +15 .. +40°C with humidity 30% to 80%, dust-free 10 years (ECU not supplied)
● Recommended: +15 °C to +40 °C
● For different values, please contact FPT

4.1.3. Handling
● Touching of connector pins is not allowed.
● Opening of ECM housing is not allowed.
● It has to be assured that no water can infiltrate through the wiring harness into the connector or the ECM
respectively. This can be achieved by using a Siphon or a breathing hole (see Figure 4.3):

breathing hole on the wiring harness

4.1.4. Coating of the Electronic Control 4.2. Vessel Architecture

Module The engine can be controlled by:
The coating process has to be discussed with FPT. If the ● an analogue accelerator pedal or throttle hardwired
Electronic Control Module is coated, it must be ensured, to the ECM
that the Pressure Compensation Element (PCE), the
connector and the label are free of coating. ● a CAN message TSC1-AE transmitted by any external
control unit on the vessel CAN
● two buttons of the CC/PTO interface hardwired to the
ECM (PTO commands) A dashboard or panel should
be present on the vessel CAN network to read and
display the information provided by the ECM.
Additionally, as described in [A.4], an Interface Unit can
be added to the CAN network to send further information
that the ECM does not provide but is needed by the
vessel. Due to the environment, the engine starter
must be separated and in an upper position. Its two
poles must be directly connected to the battery and the
relays must be insulated in a dedicated box.

4.3.1. Vehicle CAN lines

The vessel CAN is used to communicate with the VCM and other ECUs. This CAN bus is compliant to the standard
SAE J1939.
Its main characteristics are:
● Bit rate: 250 kbit/s
● Configuration: extended 29 bits identifier according to CAN 2.0B
● A CAN termination resistance of 120 Ω is inside the ECM; the other one must be situated at the other end of
the CAN bus.

In order to avoid CAN interface malfunctions, the connections between the various ECUs should be implemented
by taking into account the guideline described in Appendix B and [C.1].

7. DIAGNOSIS
7.1. On-Board Diagnosis
The diagnostic information is sent by the ECM directly on the vehicle CAN bus through specific messages according
to SAE J1939-73 (DM1), mainly intended for diagnostic information to the dashboard or panel.

7.2. Off-Board Diagnosis

Diagnostic information can also be requested to the ECM via the diagnostic protocol KWP2000 on K-Line, and
obtain information regarding the engine status, operating conditions, engine sensors/actuators malfunctions.
Below is a list of the detected faults. Four levels of degradation of the engine performance can be associated to
the fault.
1. Maximum engine speed: 3000 rpm, maximum 3. Maximum engine speed: 2770 rpm, maximum
