Long Technical/Scientific Paper

What is a long paper?

◉ This is a scientific paper for either a conference or a journal
◉ You write about work or research that you have done
◉ Conferences: Around 8-10 pages long (including or not references!)
typically double column text format
◉ Journals: can vary a lot
○ 30-120 pages long in single column
○ 15-20 pages long in double column
○ Often expressed in word count: 7,000 - 20,000 words
Some even constrain to 3,000 - 6,000 words (need to be very concise!)
○ Recently many journals do NOT provide a maximum length.
◉ The format varies according to the submission instructions of each journal or
conference: always check instructions and/or template for authors.

Content & Structure I

◉ A long paper reports work that is already formalised
◉ Several types of long papers:
○ Theoretical: arguments and evidence for scientific theories for a specific field
○ Reviews: analysis of all the papers that have been published on a specific topic
○ Empirical: describes a study based on a controlled lab experiment or a field
study
○ Methods: define research or design methods, or design tools
○ Design or Systems: describe the design or specific application of a system

Content & Structure III

◉ Methods:
○ Participants: people that have participated in the experiments or field studies (if
the research involved human beings).
■ State demography: age, knowledge, gender…
■ State origin: where and how they have been enrolled.

○ Materials & Design: the equipment used, how the design of the tested system
has been developed

○ Procedures and Analysis: the experimental design, the schedule followed, the
type of tests undertaken, the data gathered, the analytical procedures used.

◉ Account of your research and work
→ written in first person plural (sometimes singular if single author but
not very common):
“We have done…”, “Our results show…”, “In this paper we present...”, etc.

Student work in groups (25 min)

◉ Each group take their assigned conference and find the website of the
next edition:
○ S101: “Human Computer Interaction Journal” (Taylor&Francis)
○ S102: “Artificial Intelligence, An International Journal” (Elsevier)
○ S103: “IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications” (IEEE ComSoc)
○ S104: “International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction” (Elsevier)

◉ Find the following information and make a Drive presentation on it:

○ The information for authors and submissions.
○ The details for submitting a long paper (sometimes also called full paper)
○ The items that strike you as very different from conferences

◉ NOTE: Do NOT make a PDF or PPT presentation → it MUST be a Drive presentation

Writing a Long Paper I

◉ The Manuscript: term to reflect the text you write. Still not ready to
print.
◉ If you do not follow submission rules your paper may directly be
Rejected.
◉ Write a framework starting with the general structure.
◉ Start with keywords & key concepts.
◉ Iterative process.
Long Technical/Scientific Paper

Writing a Long Paper II

◉ Emphasize important aspects
○ Place them at the beginning
○ Do not hide them
◉ Come to the point quickly
◉ Repeat most important aspects
◉ Expose them:
“Our main conclusion is …”
“It is important to note that...”
etc.
Long Technical/Scientific Paper

Writing a Long Paper III

◉ Print out the text
◉ First get the big picture
○ Take only global notes. e.g. 'This paragraph is too long.'
◉ Consider revising the organization
○ Reorder paragraphs
○ strictly avoid micro-paragraphs
○ Start building bridges between paragraphs
◉ Address details
○ Read individual paragraphs
○ Take detailed notes. e.g. cross out parts that are not needed
○ Simplify sentences
○ Fine-tuning

How to reference all types of documents

◉ Every type of document needs a different format of reference: Journal
Paper, Conference Paper, Full Book, Book Chapter, Internet Document,
Website, Wikipedia Article, etc.
◉ You may find the rules on how to format your references in either of the two
following sources:
○ Standard APA format (very much used in scientific documents):
