Introduction:
Social studies educators are living and working in the middle of a revolution – the emergence of
the Internet as an integral part of education. This Digest summarizes ways that classroom
teachers can combine the Internet with other instructional resources and methods. It is a basic
guide for the novice and a checklist for the more experienced Internet user. The web sites and
ERIC resources cited in this Digest and included in the references provide the "next steps" for
exploration and implementation
1. Google Earth
Advantages:
Teachers can use Google Earth as a supplement to all kinds of lessons, bringing the
geography and topography of different locations to life. Students can perform searches,
zoom around the Earth, study layers of weather, and study eye-level photos.
Use the Voyager option, which is built into the app, to access high-quality educational
material tied to locations around the globe and across time. This material covers travel,
nature, culture, sports, history, education, science, and more.
Use the Feeling Lucky option to visit a random destination, and create a lesson plan
around that location.
Use the measuring capabilities to have your students plan trips, compare distances, and
calculate the height of mountains.
Use Street View to walk down the street in a foreign city, retracing the footsteps of a
historical figure.
Disadvantages:
The ability to see multiple layers at once has been removed, and enthusiastic users may
run out of Voyager options to explore.
2. Starfall
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Google for Education gives teachers the freedom to spend more time personalizing the learning
experience, and less time managing it. Students can learn 21st-century problem-solving and the
skills they’ll use in their future careers, with accessibility features that help every student do their
best work.
Google Workspace and Classroom are free for schools, and shareable Chromebooks extend the
benefits of technology easily and affordably to more students—with 24/7 support and multiple
layers of security to keep students and data safe.
Advantages:
It's free.
Easy to set up in a few steps.
Recognized by many schools and organizations.
Already integrated with Google Drive and other tools.
Comes with Google's security.
Free training and learning opportunities.
Integrates with many 3rd party apps.
Includes "guardian" features for parents.
Disadvantages:
4. BrainPOP
It creates animated resources that support educators and engage students - in school, at home,
and on mobile devices. Our content includes movies, quizzes, games, mobile apps, activity
pages, and much more covering hundreds of topics within Math, Science, Social Studies,
English, Technology, Arts & Music, and Health. All content is aligned to and searchable by state
standards including Common Core.
Advantages:
Watch the short videos during class time, or use a flipped model and have kids watch at
home.
These social studies lessons lend themselves well to creative activities; have students
explain a complex topic by writing their own comics in the style of the site.
Disadvantages:
Complex social concepts, historical events, and government entities are explained in a
light, genial tone that kids will appreciate. However, sometimes this tone could come
across as too casual when dealing with sensitive subjects.
5. Ed helper:
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Conclusion:
Many web sites include photographs, songs, and even motion picture excerpts. A Pentium-based
computer and a fast Internet connection are necessary to use these resources effectively. One of
the best ways to use the Internet to help students and teachers is to create a "portal" site for a
school's social studies department. A portal is a World Wide Web site designed to serve as a
main "point of entry" to the web, and features an extensive catalog of web sites and other
Internet resources, a search engine, or both.
