Background of the study

Education is the process of learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills,

values, morals, beliefs, and habits. It is a field of study concerned with teaching and

learning methods used in schools or school-like environments. Education can be

defined as the transmission of a society’s values and accumulated knowledge. In the

most primitive cultures, there is often little formal learning- little of what one would

ordinarily call school or classes or teachers. Instead, the entire environment and all

activities are frequently viewed as school and classes, and many of all adults act as a

teacher. As societies grow complex, however, the quantity of knowledge to be

passed on from one generation to the next becomes more than any one person can

know, and, hence, these must evolve more selective and efficient means of cultural

transmission. The outcome is formal education –the school and the specialist called

the teacher (Browning, et al. 2021).

Higher education, which once had the primary purpose of educating religious

leaders, now is a gateway to the modern sectors of national economies and often to

a higher social status. In some countries, access to higher education has become

considered an entitled or alternatively, a social requirement for entry into the most

prestigious occupations or high political offices.

Geographical isolation from schools and health concerns due to the COVID-

19 pandemic spurred the adoption of distance learning. Attaining a higher education

can increase your opportunities which can lead to having a successful profession.

According to Allen (2005), higher education improves an individual's quality of

life. Studies show that, compared to high school graduates, college graduates have

longer life spans, better access to health care, better dietary and health practices,
more excellent economic stability and security, more prestigious employment and

greater job satisfaction, less dependency on government assistance, more excellent

knowledge of government, more excellent community service and leadership, more

volunteer work, more self-confidence, and less criminal activity and incarceration.

Higher education will also enable individuals to expand their knowledge and skills,

express their thoughts clearly in speech and in writing, grasp abstract concepts and

theories, and increase their understanding of the world and their community.

Traditional learning or face-to-face classes is the setup of education before

the pandemic where teaching or learning method enhances the teaching or learning

process through interpersonal contact. These interactions can create a support

network among students and teachers.  Students feel more comfortable and, thus

learn easier in a familiar, traditional classroom setting.  They also access more

information and acquire a better understanding of course content materials through

these interactions (Gabriel, 2020).

As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, President Rodrigo Duterte declared an

enhanced community quarantine, which began on March 14, 2020. He directed us to

adapt to a new model of learning, which is online classes. And this is the latest setup

of education due to the pandemic.

According to Amir (2000), the COVID-19 pandemic affected millions of

students worldwide. The sudden transformation in the teaching and learning

activities into virtual modalities was carried out to continue the academic courses

while avoiding people gathering and the potential risk of the spread of infection.

Researchers believe that conducting a study regarding these issues is essential

to become aware of the challenges brought by this pandemic to everyone especially,

to the students who are affected when it comes to their studies, because of the

pandemic, to study well and seek for an answer to their problems, not only unto the

internet stability, financial, and moral support of their respective parents, but to their

selves as a student adjacent to this situation, in terms of adaptability, technical

aspect, computer literacy, time management, and self-motivation. The Researchers

readings on articles, journals on internet regarding of those past and present studies

majority are pertaining only in the internet stability, financial and moral support, that

is why the researchers want to pursue to conduct this study to address and seek

answer to the problems that is not studied before.
