§ EXTENSIVE READING § is done when the reader wishes only to form a general idea of the text and its contents, and involves such activities as observing the graphic layout of a text where this is pertinent, as well as SKIMMING reading the first (and perhaps the last) sentence of paragraphs within the text, with special emphasis on the initial and concluding paragraphs. § involves looking for specific information, locating data such as proper names, dates, measurements or terms in
SCANNING answer to questions the reader has formed in his/her
mind. § is in-depth reading, a style which the reader will apply to texts he or she truly wishes to study or absorb in full
INTENSIVE detail. Intensive reading therefore implies reading the
text thoroughly, from beginning to end, and re-reading READING passages where necessary. § as a reading style refers to the combined use of the EXTENSIVE other three styles.
