9 GPS antenna description

The GPS antenna with an integrated receiver has to be installed outside for satellite vis-
ibility. DC power feed for the receiver is supplied through the combined power and data
cable.
The GPS antenna is connected to the Sync in port on the System Module front panel.

9.1 FYGA GPS Antenna Kit

The Flexi Multiradio LTE BTS uses GPS as a source for frequency and time synchroni-
zation. A GPS antenna with an integrated receiver is installed outside for satellite visi-
bility, and is directly connected to the System Module. The GPS antenna with the
integrated receiver connected to SyncIn is illustrated in the figure GPS antenna with an
integrated receiver.

The synchronization proceeds according to the following steps:

1. The System Module receives pps from the GPS via SyncIn.
2. The System Module generates a System Clock and a System Synchronization
Burst.
3. The periodic Synchronization Burst, which contains air-interface-specific frame
numbers and time references, provides time synchronization between BTSs to
reduce interference.
4. The System Module forwards the System Clock and a System Synchronization
Burst to the RF Module(s) via an optical interface.
The DC power feed (12 V DC) for the receiver is supplied through the following
combined power/data cables:
• FYHA up to 100m

• FYHB up to 30m
The following figure illustrates the FYGA mounted on a pole using FYMA GPS Mounting
Kit.

A FYEA GPS Surge Protector Kit surge protector is available as an optional unit to
protect the System Module from transient voltage and current spikes. It is installed to the
GPS antenna line. The surge protector is particularly useful in locations with a high light-
ning risk.

Satellite visibility
Note that a 180º clear sky view is the optimum case from the signal quality and accuracy
point of view. If the clear sky view is smaller than 180º (for example urban canyons), the
GPS receiver operation may suffer from poor GPS satellite visibility, depending on the
sky view angle and location on the globe (especially latitude). The GPS receiver may be
operational, especially after the survey, even with smaller than a 180º sky view,
however, this cannot be guaranteed. Furthermore, the survey time may be longer and
the accuracy of the PPS signal poorer than with a full 180º sky visibility.
