NITROGEN
cycle
What
The nitrogen cycle is the biogeochemical circuit

that supplies nitrogen to living things and keeps it

circulating in the biosphere. Since it cannot be

used by animals and plants, a mechanism arises to

convert N2 into usable forms, for which some

bacteria are responsible. Thus, the nitrogen cycle

is composed of biotic and abiotic processes.

is it?
Components
Nitrogen fixation (N2 to NH3/ NH4+ or NO3-)

Nitrification (NH3 to NO3-)

Assimilation (Incorporation of NH3 and NO3- into

biological tissues)

Ammonification (organic nitrogen compounds to NH3)

Denitrification (NO3- to N2)

How has human caused

problems affected it
Scientists have determined that humans are

disrupting the nitrogen cycle by altering the

amount of nitrogen that is stored in the

biosphere

The chief culprit is fossil fuel combustion, which

releases nitric oxides into the air that combine

with other elements to form smog and acid rain.

But it has been difficult to know precisely the

extent to which such emissions have altered the

nitrogen balance.
