(Rube Goldberg Machine Making)

Who is Rube Goldberg and what is the Rube Goldberg Machine?

Rube Goldberg (1883-1970). Named after the Pulitzer Prize winning scientist, cartoonist,
sculptor, and author who produced satirical work on people’s overly complex problem solving
methods. In his comical cartoons, he linked together chain reactions with simple machines to
complete basic tasks, like turning on a lamp or frying an egg. Designing and building a Rube
Goldberg machine requires innovation and patience. While every machine is different, many
builders include versions of other people's ideas, tweaking them or linking them in exciting
ways. It is a deliberately over-engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very
complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction.

2022 Challenge:

Using the graph of functions as the concept of the design for the machine and incorporating the theme
“Fairy Tale”, the machine should be able to open a fairy tale book as the final goal.

Guidelines:

⮚ This is an entire class task.

⮚ Using recycled materials, the class must come up with a running Rube Goldberg Machine and

achieve the 2022 challenge.

⮚ The class must divide the task accordingly to each member. Assign roles e.g. builder, designer,

time tracker, camera men, spokesperson and etc.

⮚ There are no specifications on the height and length of the Rube Goldberg Machine but make

sure that it is not too small for the audience to see.

⮚ The machine must have a running time between 45 seconds to 2 minutes only.

⮚ The entire class will be given 30 minutes to put up the machine before presentation on September

19,2022.

⮚ During the presentation, only the spokesperson, camera men and 2 builders must be allowed to

stand closer to the machine. Spokesperson to briefly explain the design concept and how it will

run. Builders do the interventions during the running time of the machine. Camera men to record

the machine running for documentation purposes.

⮚ The recorded video of the machine running will be posted on the Mathematics Department official

Facebook page.

⮚ The department will be choosing 3 winners of the Rube Goldberg Machine Making for the entire

grade 11 strand.
