Lesson Different Forms of EM Waves

1

What’s In

During your Science 8 class, you studied about waves. Let's review some key terms related to waves. The
terms related to waves are described here, along with the jumbled letters that will make the proper
term. It's up to you to reassemble the jumbled letters into the term being described. Make a separate
sheet of paper for this.

1. It is a disturbance in space. AVWE

2. It is the highest point in a wave. SECRT

3. It refers to the extent or the limits between which

variation is possible. ARGNE

4. . It is the distance between two successive identical

ENEVTGWLAH
parts of a wave.
5. It is the distance from the midpoint to the highest (or
LMUPTDEAI
lowest) point of a wave.

6. It refers to the number of waves produced in one NEQFCEURY

second.
7. It is the lowest point in a wave.
TGHURO

What is It
You make a w

wave on the rope by moving your hands up and down while holding one end of the rope.
Depending on how quickly you move your hand, the waves you make may look different.
Similarly, if you move an electrically charged object back and forth in an empty space,
you’ll create electromagnetic waves in space. But what is an electromagnetic wave?

Electromagnetic waves are formed when an electric field comes in contact with a magnetic
field. They are hence known as ‘electromagnetic’ waves. The electric field and magnetic field of
an electromagnetic wave are perpendicular (at right angles) to each other. They are also
perpendicular to the direction of the EM wave.

EM waves travel with a constant velocity of 3.00 x 108 ms-1 in vacuum. They are deflected
neither by the electric field, nor by the magnetic field. However, they are capable of showing
interference or diffraction. An electromagnetic wave can travel through anything - be it air, a
solid material or vacuum. It does not need a medium to propagate or travel from one place to
another. Mechanical waves (like sound waves or water waves), on the other hand, need a
medium to travel. EM waves are 'transverse' waves. This means that they are measured by their
amplitude (height) and wavelength (distance between the highest/lowest points of two
consecutive waves).

The highest point of a wave is known as 'crest', whereas the lowest point is known as 'trough'.
Electromagnetic waves can be split into a range of frequencies. This is known as the
electromagnetic spectrum. Examples of EM waves are radio waves, microwaves, infrared
waves, X-rays, gamma rays, etc.

What’s More

There are seven types of electromagnetic waves. They are organized in a descending order
from the lowest to the highest frequency waves. The electromagnetic spectrum is the
organization of EM waves. The electromagnetic spectrum contains radio waves, microwaves,
infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma ray, in order of increasing frequency.

Now compare the relative wavelengths and frequency of the various EM waves to reinforce
your understanding. Discover some features of EM waves as you go along. If you're ready to
surf the waves, complete the enrichment activities below and enter into the world of
electromagnetic waves. Enjoy yourselves!

Activity 1:

Wavelength is the distance between crest to crest or trough to trough. EM

waves are bounded at different ranges. Meaning each type of EM waves has
upper and lower limits on the spectrum.
Using Figure 1, determine the wavelength ranges of each of the forms of
electromagnetic waves. On a separate sheet of paper, copy and answer the
following. Afterwards answer the questions that follows.
Electromagnetic Wave Wavelength Range (meters)

Radio Wave

Microwave

Infrared

Visible Light

Red

Orange

Yellow

Green

Blue

Violet

Ultraviolet

X-ray

Gamma Ray
Q1. Which electromagnetic wave has the longest wavelength?

Q2. Which electromagnetic wave has the shortest wavelength?

Q3. Observe what happens to the wavelength of the electromagnetic waves

as they progress (goes rightward from the figure). Does the
wavelength of the EM waves increase or decrease as we go from
radio wave to gamma ray?

Activity 2
Next up, let us compare the frequencies of different EM waves. Copy and
answer the table. Refer to Figure 2, then answer the questions that follow.
Use a separate sheet of paper for your answer.

What I Have Learned

At this point, let’s sum up what you have learned. Pick out the word that will
make the statements correct. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

The electromagnetic spectrum is made up of the following elements: 1.

(electromagnetic waves, UV radiation) are waves produced by a changing electric field,
and 2. (Magnetic field, electric charge) EM waves travel in three dimensions. at a
constant speed of 4 (air, vacuum) 3 x 108 m/s and 8 x 103 m/s.
The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into five sections. wavelength, 6 (decreasing,
rising) frequency (growing, decreasing) and 7. energy (growing, reducing) 8. Among all
electromagnetic waves, the (Gamma ray, Radio wave) has the longest wavelength,
lowest frequency, and lowest energy. The number nine The only EM wave that can be
seen with the naked eye is (radio wave, visible light), whereas 10. The wavelength of
(red, violet) is the longest at 11. The most common colors are (red, violet). 12. On the
other hand, (Radio wave, gamma ray) has the shortest wavelength and greatest
frequency; it contains the most information. 13. (energy, wavelength) of all
electromagnetic waves As a result, The lowest ionizing radiation is (gamma ray, radio
wave), while 15. The greatest ionizing radiation is (gamma ray, radio wave).

What I Can Do

Surely, you are now familiar with the many electromagnetic waves. It's now your time to

create your own electromagnetic wave chart. Make a graph of electromagnetic waves that
compares their sizes.

Cut out photographs of objects or seek for items that could be used to depict the size

of each electromagnetic wave. Paste the photographs you found on a separate

sheet of paper and arrange them according to the electromagnetic spectrum's EM wave
arrangement.
