DESIGN
EXAMPLES - STEEL BEAMS
Example 01

A universal beam section supported on a 90 × 90 × 10 angle section as shown

in Figure is subjected to a concentrated load of 100 kN transferred through the
bottom flange. Check the suitability of the section with respect to web bearing
and web buckling.
Example 2

A proposed cantilever beam 1 m long is to be built into a concrete

wall as shown in Figure. It supports characteristic dead and
imposed loading of 450 kN/m and 270 kN/m respectively. Check
the deflection criteria for the beam. Ixx = 87400 cm4
EXAMPLE 03

Check the adequacy of 533 x 210 x 92 UB Beam used for the Main
Beam shown in the following diagram in respect of shear, bending
and deflection. Assume that the beam is fully laterally restrained
at both ends.
MAIN BEAM

40mm thick screed

250mm thick concrete slab

7.4m
Beam Centres = 6.0m
Span (Simply Supported) = 7.4m
Concrete Slab = 250mm thick
Finishing Screed = 40mm thick

Density of concrete = 23.7 kN/m3

Weight of Screed = 0.9 kN/m2
Imposed Load = 5.0 kN/m2

Section Properties
Grade = S275
D = 531.1mm
t = 10.2mm
Sx = 2370cm3
Zx = 2070cm3
Ixx = 55400 cm4

Deflection of triangular distributed load = WL3/60EI
