This was my great-great-grandmother´s record player. It is very old and it still works, but of course it can´t play CDs.
People always want new technology because they think that life will be easier, but that isn´t always true. Today´s
astonishing new invention is old tomorrow, and we buy more new
machines.
I think these changes have been good for two reasons. The quality of films and music is better than before and the
machines have also become smaller. This means that you can use them everywhere. The only bad thing is that you
can´t play some films and music on new technology.
01- Read and tick the things that are in the text.
02- Answer the questions. Use full sentences.
James used to watch his grandfather's films on videos, but now he doesn't know if he can play them on DVD.
c) What will happen if they can’t put the video onto DVD?
If he can't turn the video to DVD, he'll lose his grandfather's footage.
The machines got smaller and easier to use them and the quality of footage and sounds increased.
The downside is that some footage is lost because there is no way to convert it to new technologies.
“ I was born and bred in London./ It´s the only city I know./ Though it´s foggy
and cold and wet/ I´d be willing to take a bet/ That there ain´t no other place I´d
want to go...” (Noel Coward)
London, they say, is a place for all seasons and for all tastes. Poets have
described it millions of times, photographers have taken shots everywhere.
What is the secret? Definetely not the weather – it is rainy and foggy most of
the time: cold, windy and drizzly very often. They say summer lasts one week
only!
London has also the typical characteristics of very big cities – pollution, dirt,
noise, violence..
What is then so attractive about London? What makes people live there or want
to go back there again and again? Perhaps the respect one finds for individuality
is one of the reasons. In London, everyone can be unique and can be the way he
feels well.
For example, it is common to see people dressed in the most creative and peculiar ways: in typical clothes of
their countries of origin – Arab women in veils, Indians in saris, Japonese in kimonos, Africans in bright colourful
gowns -, not to talk about Londoners themselves, whose hair may be naturally coloured or dyed in red, pink, purple,
green!
Traditions like the Royal Family or the changing of the guard; cultural life with concerts, theatres, museums;
tourist sights like St. Paul´s Cathedral, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, make this city unforgettable, leaving the
impression in your mind: “I´ve just been to London!”
