Strength Of Material
• Strength is the ability to resist forces

om
applied to the material
✓Stress is the load per unit area and is expressed

l.c
in pounds/inch square or psi.
✓Strain is the change in length per unit length of
oi
a material due to applied loads.
✓Strain is normally expressed as inches/inch.
• Stress = Young Modulus x Strain

Tubular Threads
• Threads join the individual pipes

om
✓transmit tensile loads
✓activate the connection seal

l.c
• Oilfield thread profiles
✓Round thread
oi
✓Trapezoidal thread

JAM application
• Set target minimum torque and turn values

om
• Set maximum torque and turn values
• Mainly applicable with premium connections

l.c
Exceeding the torque value may result in thread
damage and tubing restriction mainly in small
oi
size tubing like 2.3/8”
• If good shoulder is achieved, seal is guaranteed
and gas test if applicable is not required

Thread Compound
• Lubrication - reduce torque required for

om
makeup and breakout
• Corrosion Protection - short term surface
and down hole
l.c
• Galling Protection - isolate like metal
oi
surfaces

Types Of Compounds
• API modified thread compound (API Bull. 5A2)

om
✓ basic formula containing lead
• Teflon Based Compounds
✓ uses Teflon to supplement sealing
l.c
• Lead free compounds
✓ contains metals (copper) but no lead
oi
• Metal free compounds
✓ proprietary thread compounds that do not contain toxic
materials

API Modified Compounds

• Most recommended torque values are based on the

om
use of an API modified compound
• Vary in lubricity (slickness) from batch to batch
• Vary with time (short periods) heavy particles
l.c
"settle out" on the rig floor
oi
• API silicone compound is "slicker" than API
modified

VIII 17

https://oil-com.blogspot.com/

Potential Problems
• Deposition

om
– metallic particles will form deposits on the threads
• Excess Lubricant
l.c
– creates hydrodynamic pressures within the connection
• Settling
oi
– the heavy metals settle to the bottom of the container
• Contamination
– must be protected from mud, water and diesel fuel

Makeup Factors
• Volume of Dope Applied

om
• Uniformity of Coating
• Temperature of Dope Applied
• l.c
Consistency of Dope Applied
oi
• Cleanliness of Dope Applied

VIII 19

https://oil-com.blogspot.com/

Application
• Keep the dope bucket and brush free of

om
contaminants.
• Mix the dope frequently
l.c
• Coat the entire surface of the pin level with
the crests of the threads
oi
• Coat the seal area of the box with dry molly
or thin coat of pipe dope

Gas Completion Running Procedures

• All Down Hole Equipment's to be assembled, Made

om
up and Gas tested in safe area prior running the
completion.
• Preparation to run the completion
l.c
• Tubing measurements on the rack
• Clean threads Pin & Box
oi
• Drift All Tubing with Teflon drifts
• Visual inspect threads

Gas Completions Running Procedures

• Rig up all equipment • Pick up and Lay Down

om
• power tong to prevent any damage
• Dope applicator or scratch to Tubing or
• Jam unit Assemblies.
• Supra Hold Unitl.c • Save Rig time
oi
• Mass spectrometer • Also for safety picking
• Pick/up & L/d tubing from the Rack.
Machine
• Handling tools

Gas Completions Running Procedures

• Clean threads using white spirit solvent
• Inspect threads visually
• Apply very thin layer of threads compound using

om
dope applicator
• Use stabbing guide to prevent seal damage
l.c
• Apply 2 to 3 Turns using Strap Wrench to avoid
Thread crossing
oi
• Power tong with limit speed to avoid galling
• Monitor the Make up stages on JAM graphs

Gas Completions Testing

• Run hold packer inside the pipe against connection to be
tested.

om
• Set the packers and apply Gas helium to required
Pressure.
• Monitor leak rate on the Mass spectrometer Record
graphs.
l.c
• Mass spectrometer can detect up to 1 cubic ft/year
oi
• If there is slightly damage on the seal or any Tolerance
cannot seen by JAM but it will leak within the desired
testing time.

WHY USING HELIUM

➢It is non toxic

om
➢Inert and does not react with other material
➢Low atomic weight = 4
l.c
➢Easily diffuses into the atmosphere
