1. This course is primarily focused on analysis and design of reinforced concrete
members for

Flexure

Shear

Compression

© BCEE 345, Dr. Lan Lin, Concordia University

2. Design of beams, columns, one-way slabs, and foundations

BBB

BBM

3. Two limit states design are considered:

ü Ultimate limit state design
ü Serviceability limit state design

What are limit states?

Limit states — those conditions of a structure at which it ceases to I

fulfill the function for which it was designed.

Structural components of RC buildings:

• Floor and roof systems (one-way or two-way slabs)

• Beams
• Columns
• Walls
• Foundations

Structural component: a component

that contributes to the stiffness of
the structure.

1. 3 Structural Systems

Three types of structural systems:

• Moment-resisting frame system: Consists of beams and columns

Do

• Shear-wall system: Walls are continuous, extending from the foundation

to the roof of the building

• Frame/shear-wall system
