INTRODUCTION

Topography
-describes the surface features of land
The origin of topography comes from “topo” for “place” and
“graphia” for “writing”
Topographic map
-shows the slope and contour of the land as well as other natural and
artificial features.

developed from a topographic survey by a

land surveyor

• Property boundaries

• Existing buildings

• Utility poles

• Roads
• Manufactured features
• Trees natural features: rock outcroppings &
heavy vegetation
Topographic map
Contour lines
-graphic way to show the elevations of
the land in a plan
view
-Used to determine the suitability of the
land for various uses/ shape of the
terrain.
-Constant elevation

Contour intervals
-is the vertical distance between contour
lines
-lines that are evenly spaced apart

Index contour
every fifth contour line

Scale
helps users to understand how the map
measures up to the real world

Topography Applications
and Uses
Engineers

to plan a road, construct a cell tower or plan a hydroelectric dam.

Geologists

to understand tectonic activity, landforms and where to dig a mine.

Hikers

to find trails and steepness of slope to plan their ascent.

Astronomers

study the topography outside Earth like on the moon, Mars or an asteroid.

Climate scientists

tie topography into climate models to recognize air and water flow.

Designers/Architects

For site analysis

Slope analysis
Slope 0%-4%

Usable for all types of intense activities and are easy

to build on.

Slope 4%-10%

Suitable for informal movement and outdoor activity and

can also be but without much difficulty.

Slopes over 10%-25%

Difficult to climb or use for outdoor activity and more

difficult and expensive to build on.

Slopes over 25%

Depending on the conditions of the soil, are subject to

erosion and become more expensive to build on.

• Use the scale bar (km) to determine

the horizontal distance between each

contour line

• Compute the slope 1-2, 2-3 and so on.

mx100 to get the % slope

Lot Plotting
drawing the exact shape and

measurement of a particular lot

from the technical descriptions

shown in the title. The boundaries

and lot orientation on the north,

east, west and south are also

attained
