Question # 1
Identify the impact of the communication system on society and environment in the broader context.

Question # 2
If g(t ) and y (t) are the input and the output, respectively, of a simple RC low-pass filter, determine the transfer
function H (ω) and sketch |H ( ω)| , θh ( ω), and t d ( ω ) . For distortionless transmission through this filter, what is the
requirement on the bandwidth of g(t ) if amplitude response variation within 2% and time delay variation within 5%
are tolerable? What is the transmission delay? Find the output y (t ) .

Question # 3
Show that a filter with transfer function

4 ( 105 ) − jω t
H ( ω) = 2 10
e 0

ω + 10

is unrealizable. Can this filter be made approximately realizable by choosing a sufficiently large t 0. Use your own
(reasonable) criterion of approximate realizability to determine t 0.

Hint: Show that the impulse response is non-causal.

Question # 4
Determine the maximum bandwidth of a signal that can be transmitted through the low-pass RC filter in figure shown
below with R=1000 and C=10−9 if, over this bandwidth, the amplitude response (gain) variation is to be within 5%
and the time delay variation is to be within 2%. Also find the expression for the output signal.

Question # 5
A certain channel has ideal amplitude, but nonideal phase response, given by

|H (ω)|=1
θh ( ω )=−ω t 0−k sin ωT k ≪ 1

a) Find the channel response y (t) to an input pulse g(t ) band-limited to B Hz.

Hint: Use e− jk sin ωT ≈1− jk sin ωT

b) Discuss how this channel will affect TDM and FDM systems from the view point of interference among the
multiplexed signals.
